Some of the discourse on USAID has reminded me of this.
oudenonoma:

There is a Jewish story about a wealthy man who came to his rabbi and said "I have decided to build an orphanage, can you put me in touch with the relevant people?"

The rabbi was delighted to do it, and introduced the man to some charities. After a few weeks, the man came back to the rabbi.

"I have decided not to build the orphanage," he said. "I realised that I was only doing it because I wanted to be admired as a philanthropist, my motives were selfish."

The rabbi answered, "do you think the orphans will care what your motives were? Build the orphanage!"

Hi there, and welcome to #FridayFucksorSucks, a weekly game with simple rules: guns fuck, or they suck. This week, we have the Claridge Hi-Tec, a 9mm closed bolt pistol made by a Hungarian immigrant in California from 1990-1993 until the state banned possession of Hi-Tec's by name. ~1000 were made.
A pistol that looks like a tube with a long buffer behind the action, with a reciprocating bolt handle on the left side. Notice that the magazine release is similar to a Beretta's because the gun actually uses notched Beretta 92 magazine when you find them. There were also proprietary magazines however manufacture of them died with the company and as such originals are exceedingly rare. Also notice the safety which doesn't fully rotate as much as turn and shift. The guns were also available with an off-white color as well as the 8" barrel shown here. Interestingly the guns were initially sold as a gun/knife package with the knife matching the pattern however the knives tended to become their own, separate collectors item. Also available was a 16 inch "carbine" version available with a stock that kind of screams "mom says we have an Uzi at home."The action itself is relatively simple with a Mac-style bolt connected to essentially a section of steel tube that has been cut into to serve as the upper. The gun was designed by Lajos John Goncz, who also gave it the original name of the Goncz High Tech. He made about a hundred, sold the rights to a company so they could make it en mass, and then California decided they didn't like the idea and banned it's simple possession by name in the California Assault Weapons Ban.
