Yet annother article about rising flu and Covid infections where the word mask doesn’t appear even in the section telling people what steps they can do to protect themselves. There seems to be an almost pathological aversion to talking about wearing a mask even in 2026 www.sfgate.com/bayarea/arti...

this is exactly my opinion. there may be a superstrate of extremely difficult and unique safety problems around AI, but the substrate is simply that no one takes basic precautions seriously becasue they imagine (or pretend to imaigne) that it is futile, and basic precautions slow down launches.

We are five years from a trend of "do you love CDs but find it awkward to take them all with you? just rip them and use this fancy MP3 player" only ripping will now be a BluRay player with a USB socket that you plug the MP3 player into, and everything will be electric blue and cost more than $200.

The postwar funding boom in US physics came to a halt at the end of the 1960s, when officials in the Nixon administration made major cuts to the federal science budget. As historian Julia Menzel of @ihpst-uoft.bsky.social notes, the lessons learned then may be helpful to today’s scientists. #histSTM

Books on the go in the early 90s: the Sony Data Discman. Just been reading about this while downloading a 0mhz collection version of the books and a software reader. Released in late 1991 and early 1992 for $499.99, it had a backlit LCD and used the EB format stored on 3" CDs in hard-case caddies.
From the Museum of Information site: a photo of the box for the Electronic Book Player DD-8, the Discman, with a photo of the unit itself and a hard caddy CD next to it.Also from the same site: an overhead viw of the discman with a Pocket Interpreter disc have inserted into a caddy. From the same site: a photo of the Data Discman showing its little querty rubber keyboard, direction keys and YES NO buttons. Plus the LCD screen with quite a clear blue-line artwork of a street scene, the title page for the Pocket Interpreter software.

Cartoon panel in forest. Spider-Man asks Sauron, a pteranodon-man writing a triceratops, "YOU CAN REWRITE DNA ON THE FLY, AND YOU'RE USING IT TO TURN PEOPLE INTO DINOSAURS? BUT WITH TECH LIKE THAT, YOU COULD CURE CANCER!” Sauron replies, “BUT I DON'T WANT TO CURE CANCER. I WANT TO TURN PEOPLE INTO DINOSAURS.”

the fact that there's niche demand (most of your volunteer evangelists point to such cases) -- it makes your solo enterprise side hustle easier, code websites or make passable good enough art without talent -- is all well and good except per (b) above this has to make some guys trillionaires

the problem is there is no mass demand for this. you didn't have to sell email. the sole demand is by loathed corporations who are either: (a) trying to fire you; or (b) trying to make a trillion dollars getting you fired. and for (a) they are having a hard time doing it still

what i mean is basically this: there are 10^24 twelve-digit addition problems. to memorize this would require about 15 yottabytes. i observe that models are not fifteen yottabytes. so the model has to implement some function satisfying the condition "returns a correct answer to adding those numbers"
