North Americans manifest the Freudian death drive in two places most acutely: transportation and housing politics.

I’m just not sure that subtly encouraging Albertans to self-bankrupt is sound economic policy. Anything to avoid raising taxes I guess.

Property and land value taxes are great because they're largely inescapable. *hand to earpiece* Except that municipalities will basically kill themselves trying to break the laws of thermodynamics trying to achieve a state of No Tax, Only Spend.

bizarre to me that so much reporting on housing fails to interrogate the assumptions that homeowners (1) should always get to approve of changes to their neighbourhood (2) should be protected by government from any possible decline in property values www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

I’m at the AGM for the Banff Trail Community Association, where a small group of residents have arrived in the hope of forming a planning and development committee. They’ve been writing letters opposing development for a year and a half, but they want the weight of the CA behind their positions.

I just witnessed an e-scooter rider get knocked over by the driver of a giant SUV as she was making a right turn without bothering to see if anyone was in the bike lane. The victim is banged up but ok. My kid was late for swim practice because I stuck around to make a witness statement.

Social engineering is forcing everyone to drive in a system where gas prices are high and government decisions have cause insurance rates to skyrocket. Supporting freedom to choose through infrastructure that allows people to viably use micro mobility options is what UCP should be doing.

The irony of uncouver accusing YIMBYs of hiding "neoliberal supply side deregulation" behind progressive language is that he's a conservative who uses progressive language to hide his nativism. His solution to Vancouver's housing crisis is to say fuck off we're full and then cite Patrick Condon slop

This is why I've lost patience with right type of supply arguments. Yes, we need family sized units. Yes, we need affordable housing. Yes, we need missing middle. Yes, we need ground-oriented. Yes, we need TOD. YES to all of it (or at *least* most of it). Tinkering won't solve shortages!

Edmonton continues to show it's possible to have newly built, ground-oriented housing for families in existing neighbourhoods at a reasonable price. You only have to make it legal and feasible. Here's a 3bed for $1,895 with a $500 lease signing bonus.

Honestly I don’t think you need any justification for keeping an e-cargobike even if your kids don’t want to ride it any longer. My UA is my primary vehicle and I use it for everything under the sun. They are good for much more than carrying kids around.

Test rode a LvH Bullitt from @bikebikeyyc.bsky.social a couple of weeks ago and while we don’t really need a 2nd bucket cargo bike, it occurred to me that it would be a great vehicle for my kid when he’a a teenager. Much cheaper than buying him a car.

There is no compelling urban planning reason to concentrate apartment buildings on loud, polluted, dangerous main streets. This is solely a political strategy by planners trying to avoid NIMBY backlash to proposed apartments. This political strategy DOES NOT WORK. Homeowners oppose housing anyway!
