Two panel comic of a speaker addressing an audience. The top panel has the speaker saying “Who wants to allow participants to be able to fully describe their ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity” with all audience members raising their hands. The bottom panel has the speaker saying “Who wants to clean this data so we can use it in our analyses”. The audience lowers their hands and heads, and a fly buzzing over their head to indicate silence.

Teaching a research skills module this semester, and just set an exercise cleaning and recoding a hypothetical free text survey response for a demographic question. It's kind of evil (that is, realistic)

It is official: I am old. I bought this notebook weeks ago b/c I liked the colors, and someone today asked me "Are you a Blackpink fan?" to which I answered "I don't know what you're talking about". Apparently it is a K-pop thing.
A Moleskine Blackpink-branded notebook. Black cover, with a pink and white design (that looks like a page flipping). Pink ribbon.

I find it weird that the reaction to calling LLMs “stochastic parrots” (a statement about *how they work*) is to deny it because of their apparent capabilities. The reaction should be “isn’t is interesting what a stochastic parrot can (apparently) do?” or to query the appearance.

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

People are dragging him for this, but Mark Twain might agree that this is the right way to read Fenimore Cooper: www.gutenberg.org/files/3172/3...
Quote from Twain's essay FENIMORE COOPER'S
LITERARY OFFENCES: "[The rules governing literary art] require that when the personages of a tale deal in conversation, the talk shall sound like human talk, and be talk such as human beings would be likely to talk in the given circumstances, and have a discoverable meaning, also a discoverable purpose, and a show of relevancy, and remain in the neighborhood of the subject in hand, and be interesting to the reader, and help out the tale, and stop when the people cannot think of anything more to say. But this requirement has been ignored from the beginning of [Fenimore Cooper's] Deerslayer tale to the end of it."
