The EHRC chair waffling on about trans people in the times? It’s like being back in 2025 all over again 🚬

Whatever party you may support, or none, this is a sad day for progressive politics and the effects of it will be felt across politics and policy as the threat of a left challenger on social justice issues will dissipate due to toxicity

Some cursed predictions: Assuming the Green Party’s Zionism is racism motion passes as is, there will end up being an EHRC investigation into the party and questions over whether it’s engaged in indirect discrimination. Because of the particular context of the EHRC currently, the party will dig in

So at Green conference at least one ‘softening’ amendment has failed and at least one enabling amendment (deleting old policies that contradict with ZiR) has passed Really suggests the ZiR motion itself is going to pass doesn’t it

This is a good and important read and it really echoes a lot of worries I have about the information environment, doomerism and misinformation in the UK trans community context too

Fascinated by the Green focus on ‘Zack won’t have a whip telling him what to say’ line, did it test amazingly or something? Doesn’t intuitively seem like something that would cut through on the doorstep compared to ‘fed up of the Labour govt? Send them a message they need to do better’ for eg

Swing and a miss from Green Party comms giving their default ‘we want to distance ourselves from conference motions’ comment here web.archive.org/web/20260921...
She said: 'It's extremely worrying that any party in a liberal democracy would wish to pursue policies that destroy women's hard-won rights.'
Ms Joyce added: 'If this weren't bad enough, next week Green Party members may go even further in the wrong direction by voting for a motion that would grant privileges to trans-identifying people, including those who identify as 'non-binary' and 'gender fluid', while at the same time taking protections away from women.'
A Green Party spokesman said: 'Members bring a range of motions: only a small number are debated. They only become policy if passed by conference!

Record fine for university that failed to protect the free speech of trans critics
Daily Mail27 Mar 2025By Eleanor Harding Education Editor
SUSSEX University has been fined £585,000 over a transgender row which ended in an academic being driven out of her job.

The Office for Students (OfS) imposed the penalty following an investigation involving Professor Kathleen Stock, who was ‘cancelled’ on campus for her gender views.

It is the first time the OfS has imposed a fine on a university over a free-speech issue, and it paves the way for similar action against other institutions. It is also the highest fine handed out to a university by the OfS.

The three-year inquiry was based around university gender policies and whether they could be creating an unwelcome

‘The policy had a chilling effect’

atmosphere for gender-critical academics. It started in 2021 after a national outcry when Professor Stock, a philosophy lecturer, was hounded out of her job by student activists.

Professor Stock believes those born male should not have an automatic right to women-only spaces if they identify as female, which campaigners challenged.

Students launched a protest to get her fired which included demonstrations and defamatory posters. She resigned in October that year after continuing to receive hostility from not only students but also from colleagues and the University and College Union.

The investigation found Sussex’s transgender equality policy had a ‘chilling’ effect on Professor Stock’s views as well as those of students and other staff.

The policy forced tutors to ‘positively represent trans people and trans lives’ in their teaching, and banned what they called ‘transphobic propaganda’.

Arif Ahmed, director for freedom of speech at the OfS, said: ‘We know that Professor Stock changed the way she taught her course as a result. And we are concerned that a chilling effect may have caused many more students and academics at the university to self-censor their expression orScreenshot of Guardian article from 14m ago headlined Higher education regulator apologises for imposing £585k fine on university

Organising - why bother? Lots of despair from trans folks on the tl and other places of late. Things are horrible and scary. I also think we’re doing brilliantly at fighting back given the asymmetry of arms at play. We are so deep in a pit at the moment in terms of trans rights in the UK.
