Most nutrition science suggests that meals with the same basic nutritional profile will have the same impact on a person’s blood sugar. But is there something about food processing itself that influences how our bodies respond? A new study from Virginia Tech answers that question. ➡️ bit.ly/4dVtKK8
Two individuals stand in front of a large medical scanner. One holds a bunch of bananas, and the other holds a bowl of snacks. Text reads: "Food processing influences metabolism and brain activity. Virginia Tech study finds." The Virginia Tech logo is visible.

NIH’s shift to multiyear funding reduced the number of awards across a range of research areas. Grants reviewed by NIH panels that had "cancer" or "oncology" in their title dipped to around 1,590 in 2026, compared with 1,920 in 2024. Fewer grants funded means fewer shots on goal, fewer wins
The agency's shift to fully funding more grants upfront appears to have reduced the number of awards across a range of research areas. Grants reviewed by NIH panels that had "cancer" or "oncology" in their title dipped to around 1,590 in 2026, compared with 1,920 in 2024. Similarly, awards reviewed by vaccine-focused study sections dropped after steady year-to-year increases between 2018 and 2024, with 269 such grants awarded this year compared with 297 in 2024.

How do intrinsic timescales, which reflect the temporal window of neural processing, mature during development? This study by @goliashf.bsky.social @ted-satterthwaite.bsky.social &co identifies a hierarchical trajectory, from sensorimotor to association cortices. 🧪 #NeuroSky plos.io/46RzqRG
Developmental patterns of intrinsic timescale.
(a) Average timescale increases during development in youth (b) Age effects quantified as partial R2 are depicted across the cortex, displaying a heterogeneous spatial distribution. (c) Age effects on intrinsic timescale were compared to the S–A axis, identifying a hierarchical pattern of developmental patterns in intrinsic timescale along the S–A axis. The results demonstrate that intrinsic timescale in association regions increases during development in youth while it remains relatively stable in sensorimotor regions.
