Trump and Vought are now breaking both sides of spending law. They’re illegally not spending where the law requires them to spend, and they’re illegally spending where they don’t have the money to spend. What we have is an appropriations king. Spending “deals” are meaningless under that setup.

Republicans had what was a strong shutdown position: We want to keep the govt open, Dems have demands. They had traded this for Vought's position, which imo is much riskier, since it is based on an obvious lie about the need to make cuts. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/shutdown-h...
The administration is gambling the idea that the public will buy the false claim that the cuts they are imposing are caused by the shutdown. This is simply not true, and if people start to understand that Vought is imposing needless pain, using the shutdown as an excuse to hurt public services and blue states, the Republican position looks a lot harder to defend. It is therefore substantively important that the media cover this point accurately.

One blatant violation of the Hatch Act after another:
“I am out of office for the foreseeable future because Senate Democrats voted to block a clean federal spending bill (HR 5371), leading to a government shutdown that is preventing the US Small Business Administration from serving America’s 36 million small businesses. Every day that Senate Democrats continue [to] oppose a clean funding bill, they are stopping an estimated 320 small businesses from accessing $170 million in SBA-guaranteed funding.”

The email goes on to say that once the shutdown is over, “we are prepared to immediately return to the record-breaking services we are providing under the leadership of the Trump Administration.”

compared to last year’s results.” However, I take issue with the author’s subsequent interpretation of the most recent test scores which reflects poorly on his/her understanding of basic statistics. The differences in proficiency rates cited in throughout the article are overwhelmingly NOT STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT.

Using a standard p-value of 0.05, any improvement in scores must show at least a gain of five percentage points in order to be considered as statistically significant. So, for example, even the slight decline in 4th grade ISAT scores in Idaho (2024 67.1%, 2025 64.6) is not significant. Similarly, the following assertion made by the author of the article is incorrect and misleading.

“Students scoring in the advanced range of the proficient category saw a slight increase, with 23.2% scoring advanced in 2024 compared to 23.6% in 2025.” In order to have been statistically significant, 28.2% of students must have scored proficient in the language arts subtest.

It may well be that these differences would not distinguish these claims in the eyes of the
