Our NZ Medical Journal editorial highlights Health Minister Simeon Brown‘s political interference in the Medical Council. His decision not to reappoint its chair and deputy chair reflects a broader ideological rejection of evidence by this government that threatens patient safety.

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution. The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

Among all the many reasons to support Gaza, and push for ceasefire, sanctions etc., is scholasticide... Surely as academic communities and professions, we must rally around the attacks on, and obliteration of infrastructure for, our academic peers and students in Gaza.

Political analogy: You can't balance the right leaning see saw by sitting in the middle, you must be on the far left cause sitting in middle just keeps you sliding right. #Nzpol
A three-panel cartoon of a seesaw illustrating NZ political parties.
Panel 1: A stick figure with a “Labour” label sits in the middle of a seesaw saying, “I don’t want to be seen as too radical like Greens and TPM, so I’ll be balanced and sit in the middle.” On the right end sits a stick figure labeled “Nact” (representing National and ACT).
Panel 2: The seesaw tips down to the right, sending Labour sliding down towards National/ACT. The “Nact” figure says, “Thanks!”
Panel 3: A new figure on the left, labeled “Māori Green,” sits opposite “Nact,” keeping the seesaw level. The text above reads: “In the face of far right fascism, the far left are the balanced ones who stop things reaching the tipping point.”
