Vicky Collett’s husband Len died at Taranaki Base Hospital ED in 2020. At the inquest last year, the coroner found his death was foreseeable and preventable. Health NZ says the ED is “fully recruited”. But a nurse there told me staff feel like they are “drowning”.

I spoke to Sarah Kapene at 7 on a Saturday morning as she finished her final shift in the emergency department. It was another 12 hour one and she feels relief at the decision to not go back. She and other nurses and doctors describe what it’s like on the frontline of NZ’s EDs.
