Also: the naked contempt these companies have for their customers is truly repulsive. This is the time that the tech media should be up in arms and screaming at Meta! We are at the point where measurably harmful things are happening and there's still this bland, "well that happened" reporting

A very interesting, creative, and grim thread on a very speculative future. Nice to see thinking like this on Bluesky any which way . . .

There are 21 million Black people in the US. Fewer than 6% of us earn over $100K a year. The median net worth of Black households fluctuates between about $20K and $40K, depending on how much scamming happens that year (eg crypto, asset forfeiture). Black. People. Are. The. Working. Class.

In a way we are all lucky that Battle Royale was too controversial when it was released in 1999 for it to be totally subsumed by the American entertainment industry (a hilarious thought now, that a narrative about teenagers killing teenagers is “too controversial”)

the vehicles of Hiroshi Nagai

a Cadillac Eldorado is in the foreground of the image, a glossy black that almost looks blue, it's parked on the beach at an angle facing toward us. the beach is a very flat yellow, but the ocean beyond it is detailed with the tide rolling in, and the sky above it is clear save for a solid mountain of white clouds to the left.

hard to tell what car this is, looks like a Pontiac Bonneville or a Catalina, possibly a Ford Galaxie. mystery car is a coppery brown at bottom right of painting, parked at angle on the beach facing toward the ocean. behind the car is a large shrub with red flowers, and behind the shrub is a short fat palm. the sky is a blue gradient that darkens from light blue to deep blue at the top of the painting. there are three tall skinny palms on the left. the ocean waves are aqua topped with white foam.

a white Thunderbird convertible with its top down is at the bottom of the painting, slightly off center to the left. it's parked on what looks like a tennis court or parking lot. there's a big green shrub to the left of the car with red flowers, and above it, are four palm trees that reach to the top of the painting. there's a little green wall behind them, and beyond it, a very flat-looking ocean.

the beach takes up about a quarter of the painting, with a little red Mazda Familia in the bottom right corner facing the ocean, and three palm trees above it. two of them at the edge of the frame, one of them bends toward the center, and two surfboards are propped against it at the base. the sky is a deep, clear, saturated blue. between the sky and the beach is brilliant blue waves topped with pale blue foam.

the goal of bourgeois media commentators in moments like these is to trivialize populist sentiment as somehow fringe - taking clearly and uniformly expressed class rage and framing it as somehow impossible to understand.
