Stede’s smile became less bright, but he was clearly fighting to stay positive. “Mary. I meant to tell you about it yesterday and then got derailed by the other thing. My family is here for a post-Christmas winter break. Mary, Doug, and the kids. And Mary’s friend Evelyn and her service Maine coon, Ned. The whole crowd, really.”

“Oh.”

“I didn’t tell you initially because I wasn’t sure it would matter, and your people are arriving today too, aren’t they?”

“Are they?” Ed was kind of doubtful. He may have given up looking at his phone because he’d been occupied in the best way for the last several days, but several was the key thing here. His vacation was only meant to be three days, and that time was apparently already gone. “Fuck,” he groaned, and then giving into the need to be dramatic about it, he flopped backward onto Stede’s pillows and pulled the wonderfully soft blanket over his head.

Stede sat down on the bed next to him and leaned in. “I can tell them you’re sick.”

“We have a really shitty culture of presenteeism. I’d still need to give my talk.”

“Lost snowshoeing, but we have a search party out.”

“Kidnapped by Mothman,” Ed suggested. “Nah, Izzy would never believe it.”

“You could say you need more time.” Stede offered the suggestion with a tentativeness that made him sound like he was worried about overstepping.

Ed could have demanded they dig out his cabin yesterday, or that Stede take him back the way he’d brought him in the first place, though Ed wasn’t too keen to go back into the tunnel if he didn’t have to. Instead, Ed had put on a seductive smile, stayed with Stede another night, and for some reason, fucked him again. The reason was that it felt good. He liked it, and he was having a good time with one of his favorite dicks.

Mirror Ed rolled his eyes at him. Yeah, he was sort of fond of Stede too, liked him more the more time they spent together, but it didn’t change the past. He knew, when push came to shove, who Stede Bonnet was. Or had known. Real question there, if people could change. Hard as fuck if it happened. Now that he was pondering it, he could see that he hadn’t heard all of it from Stede, those fifteen years of marriage. How bad had they been? Maybe Stede had new scars he wasn’t showing either.

“Do it or don’t,” he said aloud. That’s all it came down to.
