A WIP - “Robert Redford is Depressed” - where Ed returns to his *kind of* childhood home after his mum’s death. Robert Redford is her dog. Stede is the emergency-line vet he’s been calling.

They use the side door this time, bypassing the clinic, which is too bad because Ed so loved that blue hallway with its nautical paintings hung this way and that. He'd like to take time there, study each one up close for clues about Stede, what makes him so interested in ships and shipbuilding. But the house is no less charming, and when Stede takes his leather coat to a hook somewhere, Ed soaks it all in.
Nothing is square or level, nothing is quite straight. He smiles at that - Stede moving into this little farmhouse after coming out to his actual wife, then setting about decorating the coziest, wonkiest, never-straight home. He moves close up to a series of small canvases covered in colorful, exuberant monsters. Many are bright, mustard yellow, some a shocking orange.
Your wife paint these?
Ha. Those, Stede is so close behind Ed he can feel the heat of his breath on his neck, would be from Alma's monster period.

Ed is hot. Blushing on his neck, why did that make him so hot? Precious cargo, such a dad line, such a DAD house, everything so soft and colorful and well-used, and here is Stede not having a single glass of wine with dinner just because he has to get Ed home safely.

“Point taken,” he said. “Anyway, let me drive you home. It’s late and you’ve been through a lot. I don’t want you to collapse in the street, you still seem a bit shaky.”

“That’s just because I haven’t had dinner,” Ed said dismissively.

“Oh god, Ed, what was I thinking? You must be starving! I’ll get you something!” Stede shouted, already half on his way to the kitchen to make Ed a sandwich, cursing himself for being so negligent of Ed’s needs.

“I’ll take this if it’s okay,” Ed said, pointing at the piece of chocolate tart Stede had abandoned on the table earlier, with an expression on his face that would have put a shelter puppy trying to get adopted to shame.

“Oh, of course,” Stede replied. “I was actually saving that for you …”

short oh my days snippet from chapter 18 of for wip wednesday because i haven't had much writing time lately

Maybe it was time to retire. Maybe it was time to just fuck off somewhere— maybe even back to New Zealand, why the fuck not— and just stare at walls or something. Waiting around to die felt a little dramatic— he could recognize that, at least— but living how he was living… It just didn't feel like it was working out anymore, or if it was, it wasn't working out the way he wanted it to. Maybe he'd lost his spark, or maybe he'd just gotten complacent. Maybe he needed to try painting, or something— sculpture, even; just something completely different, something where no one expected anything from him and he didn't expect anything from himself. (That was asking a lot, though; he always expected something from himself, and that was probably the whole problem.)

He couldn't bear to stick around for notes that night, lest he suggest something that made things worse again. He passed a few of the thoughts he'd jotted down off to Anne and excused himself with a quick kiss on the cheek, hoping to god that there'd be no one lingering around the theater who might recognize him on the way out and try to talk, even if it was to say something nice about the show— even if they meant it.

Stede’s smile became less bright, but he was clearly fighting to stay positive. “Mary. I meant to tell you about it yesterday and then got derailed by the other thing. My family is here for a post-Christmas winter break. Mary, Doug, and the kids. And Mary’s friend Evelyn and her service Maine coon, Ned. The whole crowd, really.”

“Oh.”

“I didn’t tell you initially because I wasn’t sure it would matter, and your people are arriving today too, aren’t they?”

“Are they?” Ed was kind of doubtful. He may have given up looking at his phone because he’d been occupied in the best way for the last several days, but several was the key thing here. His vacation was only meant to be three days, and that time was apparently already gone. “Fuck,” he groaned, and then giving into the need to be dramatic about it, he flopped backward onto Stede’s pillows and pulled the wonderfully soft blanket over his head.

Stede sat down on the bed next to him and leaned in. “I can tell them you’re sick.”

“We have a really shitty culture of presenteeism. I’d still need to give my talk.”

“Lost snowshoeing, but we have a search party out.”

“Kidnapped by Mothman,” Ed suggested. “Nah, Izzy would never believe it.”

“You could say you need more time.” Stede offered the suggestion with a tentativeness that made him sound like he was worried about overstepping.
