The poetry of the prose is as glorious as ever. But I guess the bite-sized lifestyle has come for us all, because I’m rarely ready for this level of literary sumptuosity these days…

But your question about whether that logic actually pays off is a good one. We all know another motivation is for administrators to be involved in Big Important Expansion, which doesn’t always work out…

They can offer ‘study away’ opportunities to the students, which are presumably in demand, while keeping all the money in-house.

Not faculty. Which is why I agree there is room for your agenda. But that’s different from saying ‘nobody is talking about class’ that’s the phrase that really struck me, bc it implies that you discovered this entirely new lens for analyzing the world.

‘Despite widespread agreement that class is important for occupational development, we don’t have credible causal estimates of the impact of class on employment outcomes’ rings more true to me than ‘nobody is talking about class’. I completely agree w your agenda! Maybe the NYT oversimplified

I know how the publishing game works but you could have been more measured/specific in your language. Not sure about the DEI thing either bc all universities I’ve been at have promoted ‘first gen’ sensitivity and networks etc. Although yes, not seen as a protected class like race or gender.

"no-one was talking about class"??? That's an indictment of who you were talking to. You do realize an entire discipline (sociology) has been studying class and employment/occupational outcomes for over a century. You do know Bourdieu? That said, fine work, nice paper and good media coverage.

Europe is heading into a super election year in 2027. Those elections will take place against a precarious security backdrop: war in Ukraine and Iran, a retreating US & Europeans increasingly worried about their own security. So shouldn’t this benefit the political centre? Not so fast. 🧵

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

I guess it depends on advising styles. I rarely give students ‘strategic’ advice bc that is usually guesswork. I encourage them to think about other cases and they’re generally open to ideas. The expertise/data connections/personal investment in home country all good reasons for primary interest

You think this is faculty driven? I’ve never seen that. (Not saying it doesn’t happen) Most times we see international applicants already planning to study their home country/region before they arrive, for all the obvious reasons.
