I want to be far from being alarmist but the German drafting suggestions for Irish presidency will effectively kill GDPR. This effectively is a rent transfer to firms that, in the past, illegitimately collected data without consent or not purpose bound that are now allowed...

Now there is significant developments in Europe. On 21 September, the European Central Bank launched Pontes. The ECB’s new infrastructure for settling tokenised assets in central-bank money is explicitly framed around monetary sovereignty and reducing dependence on dollar stablecoins. The

Want to understand why journalists and politicians get so excited about AI doomsday predictions but mostly ignore climate change? It's called *information pollution.* Thank you to @amywestervelt.bsky.social for coining this important new term and writing a book about it, and explaining it to me!

With @ashwinl, I visited Ukraine earlier this year. What is remarkable is that many of the issues that my research on NATO highlighted are being "solved" in Ukraine. Ashin and I are hosting an event where we discuss and share our observations from the field. Link in next post.

Late as usual, but still relevant: 25 years ago, 9/11 led NATO to invoke Article 5 for the first time in its history. Afghanistan would become NATO’s longest mission. Over the years, in one strand of my research, we studied how coalition warfare works... or didnt! 1/N

English canals see more and more algae blooms due to climate change and excess nutrient run-off. Without oxygenating the water, there are significant risks to wildlife. Unless the electricity grid is greened, such feeble adaptation attempts will make matters worse.

Very relevant paper, and one may add that is why perceived (in) security (possibly legacy trauma induced) across different socioeconomic strata is so important. This can create varieties of what I refer to as unholy electoral coalitions between groups across the income distribution….

More of this -- only if we cultivate norms that regard failures as valuable will make progress. This is how knowledge accumulates. As an aside: we also need fewer survey experiments. At the moment, we have a misallocation of effort/resources. See also these slides by Macartan Humphreys.

NEW: The current energy crisis has so far affected fewer firms than in 2022, new evidence shows. 📗 @trfetzer.com, @christinavpalmou.bsky.social, @jschneebacher.bsky.social & @iyotzov.bsky.social show that exposed firms responded in the first two months mainly with increased prices and inventories:
Quote from IFS Associate Director Jakob Schneebacher: "So far, the 2026 energy price shock has been narrower and less damaging than the 2022 crisis. Higher oil prices seem to have hit the minority of firms that use oil intensively. Based on data up to April, affected firms were more likely to raise their prices, passing on some of the cost increases to customers, and increase their inventories. We have not yet seen widespread effects on firms’ balance sheets or investment decisions, as were seen over the course of the 2022 crisis. But we will need to monitor the effects on firms over the coming months, especially if the most recent spikes in oil prices in July are maintained."

What folks don’t realize is that this will create a demand for auditable authenticity and trusted verification services/provenance — which may imply a fundamentally different societal architecture. It is also a question to what extent this is a shared endeavor between societies or unilateralism.

Many modern physical products are over-complex for basic tasks and under-engineered for failure recovery. Incentives to create moats, lock in and recurrent revenues are the driver restricting choice & competition. More competition is not the answer, a renewed social contract is.

It should be obvious that, if behavioral targeting, exploitation of behavioral biases/cognitive limitations prevails, then only a "crowd stochastic noise" revolution can help rebalance power in economies. That is: we need to add more random choices in our day-to-day life.
