In this week in the year 476, the insignificant boy-emperor Romulus (nicknamed Augustulus) was deposed by Odoacer, leader of the western Roman field army in Italy. This event has received notoriety as "the fall of the [western] Roman empire". A thread on one of the biggest Bad Ancient History takes.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

A little Roman octopus to wish you a happy week! 🐙❤️ From a Roman villa mosaic at Villaquejida, León, Spain. Limestone, AD 100-200. Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 by me #MosaicMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a mosaic fragment from the floor of a Roman villa in Spain, dated AD 100-200s. It depicts a stylised octopus using red, yellow, white, and black limestone tesserae, against an off-white background. The front-facing octopus appears almost cartoon-like, with a large red and white head and body outlined in black. Its yellow circular eyes are outlined in black with a central black dot which stare out at the viewer. Below the head and body are eight writhing arms.

This octopus and other fragmentary animal mosaics were discovered in the 19th century at the Hermitage of Santa Colomba, Villaquejida, León, which had been built on the site of a Roman villa.

"We had a really robust debate," says Joel

Christensen was accompanied by retired Homer scholars (often referred to as Homerists), editors, professors, historians and various public intellectuals. "And my wife is a dentist," he adds, "so she was the red herring in the crowd."

Eels are classic. And also classical! In fact, they're the only fish mentioned by name in Homer's Iliad. In Book 21, Achilles kills a Trojan in the River Scamander. Like ya do. And immediately, the eels begin to nibble on the dead man's kidneys. Nibble. 'Cause eels are dainty. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Ancient Greek-style art of 2 warriors fighting in front of a wall, with the Trojan horse in the background. The scene is orange tinted, with the warriors in black. The warrior on the right wears a shield, helmet, & a swashbuckling cloak. He holds a spear and is lunging forward to stab his opponent. The warrior on the left has no armor. He has an arrow in his ankle, and so is probably Achilles. He has a sword raised, but it's not going to help. He's about to be stabbed, and he can't even reach his foe. The scene looks very much like a Mortal Combat level.

Behind the men are the walls of the city, with the head of a giant horse rearing above the wall. It seems to watching the fight like a Pokemon battle. It's muzzle points towards the warrior on the right as if to say, "That's my dawg." Achilles, on the left, feels cold fingers around his heart. He had hoped the Horse would save him, but his hopes have been betrayed. The Horse is a cruel mistress.

Meme text reads:

The Eeliad"

Funerary altar of Quintus Sulpicius Maximus
This monument is the ultimate parents' brag about their child. If only it hadn't been posthumous. The altar comes fram the burial tomb of Quintus Sulpicius Maximus, whose remains were discovered in 1871 under the eastern tower of Porta Salaria, in the area of today's Piazza Fiume, during the demolition of the Honorian gate (393-423 AD).

The story of the young boy, depicted in the centre of the monument, is told in the long inscription engraved on the funerary altar, dedicated to him by his parents following his sudden death at the age of 11 years, five months and 12 days (yes, the Romans would sometimes relate the full age on these monuments). How had he died? As his parents explain, he had collapsed from too much hard work! Perhaps the parents had some guilt mixed in with that pride. But as former slaves themselves, it's perhaps understandable that they pushed their prodigy child to greater heights.

You might notice that this looks like an adult, not a child. This wasn't an uncommon Roman practice on funerary sculpture for children, showing them as they might have become, as their parents dreamed they would be. Very sad.

Sulpicius Maximus, who lived in the 1st century AD, during the reign of Emperor Domitian, had participated in an important Greek poetry competition organized as part of the Capitoline Certamen, a competition in gymnastics, equestrian sports, music and poetry. The talented boy had competed with 52 other poets, winning over the public and judges during the poetic improvisation contest.

The verses of the poem, in Greek, are reproduced on the scroll that the young boy is holding. The text was inspired by the myth of Phaeton, and is reproduced in its entirety on the marble shrine.
