a more complex issue than people think 1. lectio difficilior is a basic, if not somewhat flawed, principle that when there are manuscript variants, the more difficult or strange option is to be preferred because it is unlikely that copying error or scribal intervention would produce something weird

Also, if we use these tools to reconstruct poetry and other creative forms how can they possibly account for the creative extremes good poets take even traditional language too. Great verbal art changes the meaning of language and pushes it to a breaking point.

This is a good question, given how language models are usually explained as giving the most likely completion/correction of a text. How would they ever decide to emend a text to be more unusual?

Great thread about a pretty technical point of manuscript analysis. But the thing is, the problem with this is a problem with how LLMs see everything. The Internet and the rest of the training data are convenience samples.

the fundamental question I have had for these applications is how can LLM or statistical based methods support the "lectio difficilior?

This plan shows that Mayor Mamdani has listened to the concerns of Jewish New Yorkers — and put forward meaningful commitments and real funding to help keep them safe. Our full statement on NYC's first-ever municipal strategy to combat antisemitism:
A M N Y headlien: "Mamdani unveils long-awaited antisemitism strategy with $7.4M for prevention, security." "The Nexus Project appreciates and encourages the implementation of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Strategy to Combat Antisemitism. We are pleased to see the Nexus Document included among the tools that the New York City government will utilize to identify and confront antisemitism."Quote from Jonathan Jacoby, President, The Nexus Project: "“This plan shows that Mayor Mamdani has listened to the concerns of Jewish New Yorkers — and put forward meaningful commitments and real funding to help keep them safe. Mayor Mamdani’s strategy is rooted in an important recognition that confronting antisemitism is a critical part of the wider struggle against bigotry. Jews have always thrived in pluralistic democracies. When we defend one another and build a society where no group can be singled out for discrimination, we're all safer and more secure.”Quote from Jonathan Jacoby, President, The Nexus Project: “We're proud and encouraged to see the Nexus Document is helping guide how New York City understands and responds to antisemitism.

Building this strategy on a strong, pluralistic framework will help stem the rise in antisemitism while protecting the free expression and civil liberties that keep all of us safe.”Quote from Jonathan Jacoby, President, The Nexus Project: “We are particularly encouraged to see the strategy double funding for the Partners Against the Hate (PATH) program as well as significant investment in new resources to secure synagogues, nonprofits and other vulnerable institutions as well as expanding Holocaust and Jewish history and culture education.

This is a very important first step. The strategy’s success now depends on implementation and turning a plan into real action with real impact. We call on everyone across the ideological spectrum to help make it succeed — by offering feedback, working with city and communal partners, and encouraging the mayor's office to deliver on this promise.”
