Highly recommended! @5minmedievalist.bsky.social 's Chinese pronunciation is quite good. It is a little funny at first that the Ming are "medieval" (most would place the Chinese "middle ages" from ~2nd to 12th c.), but it makes sense for comparison, which you did well (天子 vs European rulers etc.)

It's only about the Golden Era, an invention by Mark Edward Lewis apparently, so the post-An-Lushan-Tang chaos that I worked on did exist. Or I am part of a conspiracy. Hmmm.

With all the doom and gloom around #AI in #teaching, are there any academics who have successfully motivated students to ditch AI at least for writing assignments? What worked for you to convince them?

What's crawling here? It's my author's copy of "Microhistories Retold. Insects in the Premodern World". The contributions range from studying #insects as materia medica to philosophical and literary views, and from Virgil to medieval Portugal and early China. @degruyterbrill.bsky.social @lmu.de

It goes further than this: we regularly get emails from prospective PhD students. They are obviously copy-and-paste bulk applications sent out indiscriminately, automated by AI. It seems some students also let the search for a fitting PhD station and the entire application process be taken over.

On Chinese and Taiwanese social media, users are jokingly discussing alternative designs to the proposed new #Euro banknotes showing famous people or birds: a train construction site in Germany, a pickpocket in Paris, or an attached plastic bottle cap.

A bittersweet last day at #EACS2026 in Venice. While I normally tend to stick to early history and philosophy more, this year, I have mostly listened to papers on literature and from manuscript studies, which has been very inspiring.

A masterclass has rounded off the summery visit by Martin Kern to @lmu.de. Based on his forthcoming comparative philology lexicon, we discussed the value of intercultural and interdisciplinary comparison (decentring familiar conceptions and convictions) and gained career insights for our PhD cohort.

Prof. Kern's core claim is that we must use received texts as comparative means bevause we would not otherwise be able to understand the classics at all, in the case of manuscripts due to the proliferation of variants. But we should not take it as authoritative or definitive...(1/2).

I discovered a, to someone in Chinese Studies especially, interesting detail on the facade of Westminster Abbey, London: a Chinese man's sculpture. Turns out, it is pastor Wang Zhiming 王志明 (1907-1973), who is revered as a modern martyr because he was killed during the Cultural Revolution.
