The illegal boat strikes began exactly one year ago today. The boat strikes weren’t really about stopping drugs. They were about testing for compliance to see who would obey illegal orders & purge objectors. Trump was normalizing his ability to smite anyone—like the angry God of the Old Testament.🧵

If you want to really know how the outrage machine gets fired up: 1. Schmitt plans to drop “bombshell” on Smith 2. Someone plants story that Schmitt is a Vance VP contender to run same day 3. Right-wing Twittersphere gets talking points 4. Schmitt steps in it 5. Scheduled tweets go out anyway

Once again, the Supreme Court prioritizes imaginary harms done to Trump by not allowing him to indulge in his conspiracy theories, as opposed to the very real harm done to citizens who may lose the ability to vote in this case.

The youngest person his pager attack killed was 9-year-old Fatima Abdullah, who had just started 4th grade. The pager was on a table when it went off and she picked it up to take to her dad. It exploded in her face and reports said it covered the room in her blood. She wanted to learn English.

Justice Department Ends Over 50 Half-Century-Old
Desegregation Cases
Throughout the United States
WASHINGTON - The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division announced today the dismissal of more than fifty desegregation cases
- from Waterbury, Connecticut, to Flagler County, Florida - ending matters that had remained on court dockets for more than half a century.
"In this administration, we are ending prolonged federal oversight of these school districts because the effort does not reflect the reality of those classrooms today," said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. "In some cases, school districts have been under federal control for more than 60 years. Now these local school districts can redirect taxpayer dollars back to benefitting students, instead of funding onerous and outdated consent decrees."

Weird coincidence that all this is happening the same day as the AI air control rollout. “You’re absolutely right - a forty five degree angle of approach is entirely too steep for landings, and that’s on me. Would you like me to call some local mortuaries?”

Research units from across government have been gutted. More than 10,000 PhDs have left government. For example the research arm of the Department of Education lost 90% of their staff and the research office for the Secretary of Health and Human Services lost an estimated 60% of their staff.

Right now, WAY too many resources and way too much attention are going to largely silly Hypothetical Futuristic AI Doom Scenarios - because that's what the AI Millenarian Death Cult cares about - instead of actual, right-now, AI harms. And they've been getting away with it for too long.

I believe the danger created by people at AI labs assigning a 10% chance to AI destroying humanity is greater than the actual risk of AI doing so (which I think is far, far lower). Believing the stakes are existential can justify terrible decisions.

A scarecrow who was actually quite together and sexy around the age of 38 but whose appearance took a dramatic turn for the worse over the next four years, due to a combination of alcohol abuse and internalised rage.

A friend found this clipping in some old files. Haven't seen this before. Mind blown.
Color political cartoon by Danny Hellman from the New York Press dated October 6-12, 1999. In it, Donald Trump and his then wife Marla Maples being shown a model of the White House with many added stories and a shiny gold T on the top, with Taj Mahal towers on the side and flags flying with a T. It is labeled "Proposed White House Renovation." A ghoulish Philip Johnson says, "Granted, It's in violation of several of Washington D.C.'s landmark and zoning codes. But of course as president of the United States..." Trump, licking his lips, says, "It's tremendous, Philip, when do I move in?" The caption beneath is Spectacularly unqualified egomaniac Donald Trump contemplates a White House run"

In the summer of 2013, two esoteric, technical, incredibly important texts were published within weeks of one another: the first is the Snowden leaks, which revealed a system of global, pervasive digital surveillance. 1/
"Eugène Delacroix's painting 'La Liberté guidant le peuple' ('Liberty Leading the People'), depicting the French revolution as a ragtag group of peasants led by a flag-waving, bare-breasted incarnation of 'Liberty.' The painting has been altered: the scene is now being observed with a giant, smoke-shrouded CCTV dome, and the distant building have been replaced with a mainframe computer.
