Reading has become an endangered species. Which is half the problem with American political life. Maybe more than half. If you can't read, you can't think. Then you can fall for anything. The idea, for instance, that the truth is fake news.

Re the fire at the Grand Burstin in Folkestone... "the "very severe" fire had raised concerns about the structural integrity of the building," (BBC News) Clearly they hadn't seen the Burstin before the fire. Grand it is not. Deserves demolition.

This made me smile, attached to an ordinary cast iron drainpipe on a house in Durham. #TinyJoys
A cast iron drain pipe going down the side of a white-painted house. A crest of red feathers and a bright orange beak made from something solid have been attached around it. It looks remarkably like "Feathers McGraw", the evil criminal penguin from The Wrong Trousers.

If the UK govt can't agree on assisted dying, can they at least agree on assisted living? Or will they wash their hands of the burden of palliative care and pretend that people are not suffering with the woeful state of end-of-life care? A good death is just as important as a good life.

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days! Wow! What a thing to claim! And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it. Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄 🧵 1/26

Hmmm, if it has to be British films, made in Britain, with British money, this is why the list has so many old films on it. Where is The Life of Brian, The Man Who Never Was and Kind Hearts and Coronets? I've seen three on this list (and I did Media Studies A Level).

As toiletgate seems to have exercised many (www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...) this is a timely reminder that many European cities popular with tourists do not have free public toilets. There are a lot of tourists in the Silver Street area so it makes sense to charge a fee for staffed toilets.

Cambridge City Council defends £1 charge for new public toilets

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Anyone in government responsible for the benefits system should have more understsnding of it, and preferably have experienced it themselves. Only by talking to people with experience of the systematic failings of PIP will change ever be made.

[TV show titles]:
SORT YOUR LIFE OUT

2
[STACEY SOLOMON and the team are outside NIGEL FARAGE’S house with Nigel and his girlfriend LAURE FERRARI]

STACEY:
So Nigel - you're a politician aren't you?

3
FARAGE:
Yes Stacey but I also have a hobby...

4
LAURE [proudly, but slightly worried]:
Nigel collects nutters.

5
[Interior - Stacey and the team entering Nigel and Laure’s house. It is crammed with weird-looking people].

STACEY:
Oh my goooorsh

6
STACEY:
Look at all the weirdos!

7
STACEY:
Where do you sleep?

NIGEL:
Over there
on the pile of racists

8
[Nigel is showing Stacey his collection of lunatics]

NIGEL:
This one talks a lot about UFOs in Doncaster

[He gestures to councillor Kieran Lay standing in a display case]

STACEY:
Wowww...

9
[Showing her Reform councillor Steven Lewis, standing behind a lamp]:

NIGEL:
This one thinks we are in a simulation made by Satan called ‘the Matrix’

STACEY:
So many types!

10
STACEY [voice over]

But Nigel is worried his collection is affecting his electability at work.

[Nigel is starting to cry]

STACEY [putting hand on his shoulder]:
Oh babe...

11
[They are now in THE WAREHOUSE where Stacey puts all the belongings out into zones. Each zone is full of weird looking people. They are labelled: RACISTS, ANTISEMITES, PLANDEMICS, MISOGYNISTS etc]

STACEY:
So listen Nigel,

We can't leave leave the warehouse...

12
STACEY:
Till you've donated half of these to Restore.

NIGEL:
I CAN'T DO IT STACEY

Just back from watching Supergirl at our local cinema. Now, I don't usually like DC films because of the reckless property damage, but this was good - probably because it wasn't about men saving the world, but about women saving other women (and a dog).

It's probably time European journalists wrapped their heads around Heat Index (temp + relative humidity). In high humidity, sweating is less efficient, making heat worse, e.g.: Experiencing 35°C in London UK (70% RH) is more dangerous than 50°C in Phoenix Arizona (15% RH)

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.
