#Boktober 07 Still attempting to do some chickens this month! The goal is not how many but that I fill a two page spread, so it'll be whatever fits and however many that ends up being. This is one of my sister's chickens :) #chickens #birds
A loose watercolor and ink sketch of a chicken with feathers floofed out on its head. It's mostly white and browns with grays, the real chicken has a lot of striped detail on every single feather but I went more impressionistic with it. Overall, the chicken appears very unamused. Written under it is Boktober 07 and kamakru.com

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

The Detroit Free Press allowed readers to submit their verdict on who won the debate between Dr. Abdul El Sayed and Mike Rogers— but the only two people who said Rogers won decided to include anti Arab slurs in their letters in addition to abject lies. So the DFP refused to publish them.

So, if you're feeling tired, burnt out, or discouraged, do what you've gotta do. Tend your wounds. Hug your cat. Watch some bad TV. Don't argue in circles with strangers on social media. Don't tell everyone they're doomed. The world does not need your particular spin on giving up.

#birds #alien-visitors This is actually a Starling, mid shake while splashing in the bird-bath. The trail-cam's exposure time has no chance of stopping the motion, so you get this fabulous blur - and now I am thinking it might be an alien creature of some sort and not a Starling after all...
A very blurry image of a Starling standing in a shallow stone bird-bath in the garden. It looks like two fuzzy legs, a fuzzy tail off the back, and a conical blur of white, black and grey - almost looking like a drill-head or some weird misty shape being held up by those legs. No face - just a blur.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

My latest @npr.org story: If you have to use the U.S. Postal Service to return a mail-in ballot, USPS recommends mailing it at least a week before your state's deadline. And if you're mailing close to Election Day, stop by a post office to ask for a postmark to make sure it gets one on the same day

Why mailing a ballot close to Election Day may get it rejected for a late postmark
If you're using the U.S. Postal Service to return a ballot close to Election Day, officials recommend getting it postmarked at a post office to avoid getting caught up in mail processing changes.

So sure, my FIL got the worst outcome with frank infertility, but even diminished fertility in a country that is pushing a message that people should have more babies seems counterproductive. The fact that the MMR uptake rate has dropped low enough for this to happen is infuriating.

Using very modern techniques, there are ways to harvest sperm from the testes but from a practical standpoint, it's still infertility. There was also a letter published recently reminding reproductive endos to consider mumps as a cause of infertility in people raised without access to vaccines.

This enrages me so much. Mumps orchitis made my FIL sterile. We don't have good studies on things like decreased fertility because in the 1940's we weren't doing studies on every aspect of every thing - we were more focused on just developing a mumps vaccine.

Its body is in profile facing left with its head turned slightly towards the camera making it look especially cute. Masses of yellow daisy-like flowers and light blue sky reflected in still water along the shore of a shallow stream.
