after all, those reforms are profoundly illiberal, probably have more deeply felt opposition than support among Lib Dem voters, and opposing them doesn't entail public expenditure (the opposite, if anything)

Two things which stand out from the full Reform policy document on ending asylum. 1. It would be a hostile environment on steroids. There would be migration checks everywhere. This would, inevitably, be vast numbers of other people caught up in it.
Embedding immigration enforcement throughout the state
A Reform UK Government will direct every organ of the British state, both local and national,
to make it impossible to live in Britain illegally. This will involve several large policy shifts,
and many smaller changes. Overall, we expect it to produce a major increase in voluntary
departures.
Currently, Immigration Enforcement capacity is extremely weak. Just 12,791 illegal-working
visits were conducted in 2025.36 By contrast, there were 350,000 food hygiene visits,37 51,020
non-domestic fire safety audits,38 and 13,200 HSE workplace inspections.39 There were tens
of thousands more across trading standards, environmental health, housing and licensing
inspections.
Currently, these visits do not include an immigration check. But this could be easily incorporated.
Immigration checks do not require highly technical qualifications, and the officials that conduct
these visits should be trained to also conduct a basic migration check. This would increase
Immigration Enforcement capacity by a factor of at least 10, and up to 40.
These checks would feed data back to Deportation Command and the Migrant Identification
Centre, increasing their ability to identify illegal migrants, leading to a large increase in
voluntary and enforced departures. Revenue shared with local governments generated via
fines on those employing illegal workers will encourage local cooperation, which in turn will
generate more data for Deportation Command.

Kemi Badenoch, who is currently purging the Tory candidates list, tells Today she stands for "uniting the country" and wants to "bring the country together". She then laments the Coalition years when "we had to make concessions". It's amazing how often "unity" means "everyone must agree with me".

Politically, the best option would be to keep the name of the 'triple lock' but change the formula - say, to the middle of the three components rather than the top one. Too many people will confuse 'scrapping the triple lock' with 'scrapping increases' or even 'scrapping the pension'.

How about considering the voters of today - in hospitality and creative industries and education and the wider services sector and the gig economy - who actually exist and are the working class we actually have rather than trying to bring back the fantasy working class voters of the past?

Luxury retailers want taxpayers to fund a 20% tax break for foreign tourists. They paid consultancy Cebr to claim this will raise £2.6bn for the UK. That convinced Sadiq Khan and Kemi Badenoch. But it's false: a free lunch. Four basic errors mask a £600m loss. Thread:

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

Ratcliffe gives no particular idea of what he wants. But, given that earlier error, and his saying "nobody's doing that" in the new interview, it is a reasonable hypothesis that he just does not know that net migration has fallen from 800k in year to July 2024 to 171k in 2025 (and lower in 2026).

The RNLI rescued Luftwaffe pilots in WW2 because the organisation is there to 'save life at sea' - it's something to be immensely proud of. But as I've said many times before Farage and Co don't seem to have pride in Britain and its institutions beyond flags and crap Enoch Powell said 60 years ago.

For Webb to wash his hands and throw the VAR tram under the bus negates his role. Airline pilots have training in cabin resource management to overcome the stress and hierarchy issues when difficulties occur. Obviously this is different in scale, they deal with potential loss of life.

Peter Maxson @petermaxson.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Both of these are systemic and come from the top. I don't know the training received but there clearly needs to be more on having the confidence to intervene especially as refereeing is very hierarchical. The urgency comes from RefPro but also wider industry stakeholders.

Peter Maxson @petermaxson.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
What is really apparent is both the urgency/speed of the decision making process and the lack of involvement from the rest of the team. Both of these come from the top. The urge towards speed should not be at the expense of accuracy especially where a number of steps are needed.

Peter Maxson @petermaxson.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
The extended VAR debate has focussed on completely the wrong things. So the decision was wrong, although not as black and white as the media has it. Sure they, and players, have never made a mistake.
