The ultimate revenge of banned books is that they are now deeply and inextricably embedded in the AI behemoths that stole all the books. And they will live forever in the writing of all future job applicants seeking a position in your lab. Fahrenheit 451 indeed.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

I don't think this is necessarily true. Many scholarly societies use income from their journals to support their other activities (and huge salaries of directors). In this case I think they have almost identical interests to for-profit publishers. Indeed, they often lobby together against reform.

After two days of intense meetings in Genk I hack across to Wuppertal for the obvious reason: a day gadding about on the Schwebebahn.
The Schwebebahn is an early and surviving example of a suspended railway. The blue cars hang below a steel running rail suspended above the streets and more often above the River Wupper

I think you can actually see the seam here between what the BBC journalist wrote, accurately repeating the statement of the expert, and where the editor watered down the headline
BBC headline is "Climate change likely played role in Nepal-Tibet flood, study finds" - note the "likely"The first actual paragraph of the story says "There was absolutely no doubt that human-induced climate change played a role here in the preconditioning of the disasteri, said Dr Friederike Otto, a climatologist at Imperial College London who co-authored the study." Note the "absolutely no doubt", which is quite different to the likely in the headline
