I don't think this is necessarily true. Many scholarly societies use income from their journals to support their other activities (and huge salaries of directors). In this case I think they have almost identical interests to for-profit publishers. Indeed, they often lobby together against reform.

After two days of intense meetings in Genk I hack across to Wuppertal for the obvious reason: a day gadding about on the Schwebebahn.
The Schwebebahn is an early and surviving example of a suspended railway. The blue cars hang below a steel running rail suspended above the streets and more often above the River Wupper

The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.

I think you can actually see the seam here between what the BBC journalist wrote, accurately repeating the statement of the expert, and where the editor watered down the headline
BBC headline is "Climate change likely played role in Nepal-Tibet flood, study finds" - note the "likely"The first actual paragraph of the story says "There was absolutely no doubt that human-induced climate change played a role here in the preconditioning of the disasteri, said Dr Friederike Otto, a climatologist at Imperial College London who co-authored the study." Note the "absolutely no doubt", which is quite different to the likely in the headline

Most bath times this guy saves the day. Over the years he’s rescued dinosaurs, superheroes and sea creatures. Our kids are pretty clear this is unambiguously and definitively one of the good guys. I think the vast majority of grown ups would agree with them.

Maybe this is mean, I do realise that not everyone can travel but ... It is lovely that the Bayuex Tapestry is in London but Bayeux is close to Cherbourg and Le Harve with ferries from the UK. It was quite easy to pop in to see it while either holidaying in Normandy or passing through.

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

If only there were some legal term for where 12 or more persons who are present together use or threaten unlawful violence for a common purpose and the conduct of them (taken together) is such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety.
