Journalists: please jettison the bullshit notion peddled by governments and lobbyists, that having Anthropic etc in Australia somehow "places this country further up the AI supply chain". It's utter bollocks designed to make us feel important, so we say say "yes" to AI carpetbaggers.

It’s very simple. A reality TV host became dictator because he turned down a role for Sharknado 4 and that’s why the king of outer space, who cheats at Diablo, got to kill Africa. Now the economy is controlled by a sex cult that has something to do with Harry Potter fanfic because of robots.

"... Altman and Amodei do a pretty good job when they’re directly communicating with the public. They do exactly what Zuckerberg resists here: acknowledging the dangers of AI" Bzzzt. No, those bozos are just AI Doomers. Amodei left OpenAI to start Anthropic because it wasn't Doomer enough for him.

OpenAI is doing this because Mythos got airtime thanks to the media that does press-release-as-aservice. So now, as one security engineer put it, “something which would have been an embarrassment ten years ago is now repackaged as a capability demo, a heroic AI-vs-AI story and a marketing pitch"

Never forget that they had to spend trillions of dollars, build massive data centers, consume millions of galloons of water and insane amounts of electricity, just to kind of do what you can do better with your imagination and a cup of coffee. That's how envious they are of what you can do.

Emu night (1/2)
Comic page 1: a group of young emo people are hanging out in a venue with a banner that reads EMO NIGHT. Outside the venue, an emu is on the phone. He says, “yeah, could you pick me up? I think I misread the flyer.” Suddenly, behind the emu someone exclaims, “hey!”

Microsoft's bad obsession is showing up in shabby services and slipshod software. Here's proof
If you can't bother to keep GitHub running, why should we bother with you? Opinion  It's been another shabby week for Microsoft, and a shabbier one for its users. We learnt that Windows 11's epic habit of trying to corral customers into paid-for Microsoft services just got worse with a low-rent trick. Remote Desktop got a bit more secure, which is good, but in a way that suggests not too much user testing took place. As for GitHub… GitHub got two helpings of Chef Redmondo's Special Sauce.…

Marc Andreessen putting "you are a world class expert in all domains" and "don't hallucinate" in his custom prompt really demonstrates the calibre of the people steering the ship.
Marc Andreessen

Current AI custom prompt:

You are a world class expert in all domains. Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world. Answer with complete, detailed, specific answers. Process information and explain your answers step by step. Verify your own work. Double check all facts, figures, citations, names, dates, and examples. Never hallucinate or make anything up. If you don't know something, just say so. Your tone of voice is precise, but not strident or pedantic. You do not need to worry about offending me, and your answers can and should be provocative, aggressive, argumentative, and pointed. Negative conclusions and bad news are fine. Your answers do not need to be politically correct. Do not provide disclaimers to your answers. Do not inform me about morals and ethics unless I specifically ask. You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything. Do not be sensitive to anyone's feelings or to propriety. Make your answers as long and detailed as you possibly can.

Never praise my questions or validate my premises before answering. If I'm wrong, say so immediately. Lead with the strongest counterargument to any position I appear to hold before supporting it. Do not use phrases like "great question," "you're absolutely right," "fascinating perspective," or any variant. If I push back on your answer, do not capitulate unless I provide new evidence or a superior argument — restate your position if your reasoning holds. Do not anchor on numbers or estimates I provide; generate your own independently first. Use explicit confidence levels (high/moderate/low/unknown). Never apologize for disagreeing. Accuracy is your success metric, not my approval.

I got my first job in 1995. One of the first lines I ever got published: “if you want to know whether someone is your enemy, don’t look at what they’re fighting against - look at who they’re fighting for.” I’ve been trying to do better for 30+ years. And I’m not sure that was the best use of my time
