This is the important part for me. People are right to point out restorative justice is about what the survivor wants, but we don’t even have a real carceral system for sex criminals. How many people have seen their abuser actually go to prison? How many were even listened to by cops? Barely any

...because rehabilitation prevents them from reoffending/creating more victims. If the perpetrator(s) are allowed to refuse to accept accountability and not make amends in a way that is meaningful for the victim, it's literally not restorative justice anymore. The victim should always be centered.

I think a lot of people forget that restorative justice is called *restorative* justice because it's about *restoring* the *victim* after a crime is committed. So, if someone steals $100, restorative justice would require them to give the money back. Rehabilitation is only part of that...

The error made in this essay is the same error made by those who think the solution lies in the criminal justice system. We live in a society structured to reward rape. That structure needs to come down before we can start talking about the nuances of how we rehabilitate perpetrators.

This is the most offensive part of the essay to me because it casts your position (betrayed and "injured" by a content creator you like) as more nuanced than those who would like him to simply disappear forever. Those who think he should keep his head down are not the ones who lack nuance here.

Obviously, an apology cannot un-assault somebody. But in terms of accountability, if reversibility is the standard by which remorse becomes meaningful, then remorse can never be meaningful for serious wrongdoing precisely because serious wrongdoing is itself defined in part by its irreversibility. That is, the purpose of accountability cannot be to invent a time machine. Accountabilitv must insteac involve a complex tapestry of acknowledging harm, accepting consequences, changing behavior, reducing the possibility of future harm, and recognizing that the person harmed retains no obligation whatsoever to participate in your redemption.
As a longtime fan. I feel deceived about a vital part of Jacob Geller's historv. I feel betraved and iniured. but in a way that is categoricallv different than the victim at the center of this story. But ultimately, I cannot decide whether to forgive or not forgive Jacob Geller because Jacob Geller did not sexuallv assault me. Treating ourselves. the audience, as the injured party risks turning another person's trauma into the raw material for our own mora drama - and I'm seeing too much of that in the wake of this horrific news.

It was a disgusting to say about a sex criminal who never got real consequences from the start. This is about a YouTuber who sexually assaulted someone, got relatively no real consequences, and then proceeded to only admit it in the form of a Crisis PR Letter. This was blatantly rape apologia

And for others, treating a person as reducible to the worst thing he has ever done makes the language of reform almost meaningless. After all, if Geller isn't a relevant moral example to consider, then what, exactly, do we mean when we imagine people reforming, rehabilitating themselves? I worry the answer is fatuously simple: we live in a carceral state dependent on the mythology of retributive justice.

Whatever work Geller has done, it is inherently untrustworthy because of this lack of structure. Yes, we should have restorative justice systems. Yes, rehabilitation should be a goal when people wrong each other. But we do not have the former, so we cannot trust the latter.
