New HESA dashboard on international students drives home impact of Brexit. Germany (7%), France (5%) and Greece (5%) were (like Ireland, at 6%) all in the top 10 providers of UK international students in 2012-13. Gone except Ireland (now 2%); replaced by Bangladesh (2%), Nepal (5%), Pakistan (10%).

Of *course* the ‘AI boom’ will make us poorer. It’s a ‘boom’ created by tech bros for tech bros, and they’re pretty much the worst human beings on the planet. How could it possibly do anything else?

The perfect way to put it. They found a way to worm a subscription between you and your normal work.
A screenshot of a post on Threads by Joe Hill. The post reads: "Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less."

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

I’m trying out a new choir on Weds night, so I’ve been working my way through the score of Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor this evening. Bloody Hell, what a challenge! As Emperor Joseph II said in Shaffer’s Amadeus, “Too many notes!”

Today’s update: well, we didn’t get to tackle the worst section of the old barn wall today, because the lads have hopped off to another job 😩 Instead, I had the delightful job of sifting through this huge pile of brick rubble, looking for reusable bricks. A thankless task if ever there were one.

Liar. Small boat crossings peaked under Johnson in 2022 reaching 46,000 in 2022. In current year they are 18,565 and falling. Also prior to Boris Johnson's Brexit there were none.
It's a disaster, and it can all be traced to
Labour ideology. Burnham has no mandate
from the people. He has no real ideas, and
no plan,

End of week 2 (day 7) on the garden project, and repairs to the rear wall of the barn continue apace. Today has been about buttressing it with some strategically placed steps, and prepping for underpinning while trying not to bring the whole lot crashing down. We tackle the worst section on Monday 😬

A beautiful morning for a stroll around Bungay. The antique & bric-a-brac shop on the Market Place always has some quirky stuff. Today, a huge papier-mâché clown head, an unfeasibly long dachshund, a shaggy highland bull, and a disturbing headless child mannequin. My wallet remained in my pocket.

This is awful. There are huge profits to be made from the care of children, but all too often the standard of care, and quality of life of the children, is wretched. See also care of the elderly, and the infirm.

Day 6 of the garden project, and our team have started to repair/rebuild the brick plinth of the old barn. That’s 3m part-done (the finished wall will be 5 courses higher), only 59m to go. Gulp! An interesting discovery today - the barn was part-built on the foundations of a much smaller building

I believe trying to define what Englishness is to be a mug’s game. Any attempt to introduce precision results in absurdity. But angry white men in Union Jack underpants do not have a special insight. If your definition is more inclusive it is not watering down any objective standard.

Day 5 of the garden project over, our landscaper having returned safely (phew!) from cycling 3x up the notorious Mont Ventoux. We’ve now completely cleared 1/4 of the old barn foundations, apart from a stack of reclaimed bricks which will be used to rebuild the plinth. A real sense of progress 👍
