To further explain why I felt the need to attend Eastercon earlier this year and plan to attend it again in 2027, it's because Donald Trump and the Republican Party have transformed my country into one I can no longer recommend any of my friends visit.

Received another four-figure payment from Marvel for reprinting one of my late-'70s backup features in The Avengers Omnibus Volume 6. Unfortunately, the decimal point for that payment is in the *middle* of those four figures. But, hey — it'll cover the cost of this weekend's Capclave donuts!

A few days ago, I shared a link to the City Reliquary page which displayed my donation of a brick I rescued in 1982 from the rubble of what had been the Helen Hayes Theater. As only a fragment of my accompanying letter was visible in their photo, I thought I'd dig out and share the full letter here.
Dear City Reliquary:

While visiting your marvelous museum last week, I realized that an object which I have carried with me through four states over 33 years should from now on reside with you. And so enclosed please find a very special brick.

The Fulton Theatre opened in 1911 at 210 West 46th Street. But that isn’t the name under which I knew it, for it was renamed the Helen Hayes Theatre in 1955, the year of my birth, to honor the great actress of that name, and was demolished starting on March 22, 1982, after a temporary injunction was lifted.

The theater world was aghast, and there were many protests and arrests, but nothing could stop the machinery of progress from tearing down the historic theater.

Christopher Reeve said during those final protests (as reported in The New York Times), ''Even if they win today we must never forget how we feel here.’'

I did not forget. On April 27 of that year, I squeezed over the wooden fence protecting the site and retrieved a brick. A brick which I am now handing on to you.

How can I be so sure of the date of my acquisition of this brick? Because on April 28, I made the following entry in my journal.

[I then inserted a scan from my diary which included the following handwritten entry: "We had dinner before the show, and while wandering the Times Square area I was aghast at the pile of rubble that was the Helen Hayes Theatre, the demolition of which was begun while I was in Oregon. I picked up a brick by leaning over the protective wooden fence, and it is now sitting on top of one of my shelves."]

Can I be sure that this brick is from the Helen Hayes Theatre, and is not the detritus of a nearby souvlaki stand? I cannot. But until proven otherwise by experts in the history of bricks, let us maintain that it is.

I have treasured this memento for 33 years. Now it’s your turn.

Sincerely,

Scott Edelman

Mezzanotte — where I recorded an episode of Eating the Fantastic with @larazontally.bsky.social — was just chosen as one of Eater's 38 Best Restaurants in Seattle — something those of you heading to next year's Nebula Awards weekend should remember. It was one of my favorite meals this century.
Mezzanotte

Open for: Dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Reservations recommended.

Price range: $$$$

This Georgetown nook is one of those rare places that manages to feel both comfortable and special, thanks to warm service, an easy, romantic atmosphere, and focaccia so cloud-like you could use it as a pillow. Northern Italian classics are executed faithfully and with finesse; on a recent visit, the osso bucco was meltingly tender, an earthy mushroom risotto the platonic ideal of al dente, and the pasta to Bolognese ratio perfectly calibrated to ensure optimal sauce coverage of noodle surface area. The eight(ish) course, $150 per person Nonnakase menu, eaten at the bar top, is an opportunity to let the kitchen flex its ample creative muscles.

Best for: A cozy date night. Bathroom selfies.

Coincidentally, the original art for John Buscema's cover to Tarzan #1 sold THIS AFTERNOON for $87,500! comics.ha.com/itm/original...
Description from the Heritage Auction site:

John Buscema Tarzan #1 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1977). The Lord of the Jungle takes on the King of the Jungle on this homage cover to Tarzan's first appearance on the cover of The All-Story Magazine in 1912. This issue marked Tarzan's move from DC to Marvel, kicking off a series that would run for 29 issues. This powerful image was rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 9.75" x 15". The entire masthead is a stat paste-up. There is residue from a missing caption paste-up ("Fury-Filled First Issue!") just under the masthead. Also missing is the bottom text blurb "At last! The world's greatest adventure hero -- presented in the thrilling Marvel style!" Lightly toned and in Very Good condition.
