i'm tired of seeing “escalating ai capabilities” reported as if it is a fact. let's be clear this claim does not rest on transparent, well-defined, independently validated metrics, but is inferred from model behaviours elicited by humans and measured through opaque, poorly designed evaluations

This is a tale of birds🐦 & snakes🐍. The invasive Brown Treesnake (Boiga irregularis) has caused untold devastation on the island of Guam. Introduced after WWII via cargo ships, they cause power outages by shorting lines, but the real damage is to the native birds of Guam & particularly the Sihek.
A golden yellow snake with yellow iris and black slitted pupils is close to the camera. It's extending it's long scaly body through dark green leaves and greenery at night, illuminated by a flash so that the snake is well lit, but the jungle-like greenery is largely dark.

Stolen from a NatGeo article, the original caption was "The brown tree snake slithers through vegetation."

My wife has been HIV+ for 34 years. She’s alive today b/c work of activists who destigmatized the virus, pushed medical science to adapt & find ways to treat it, & advocated for gov health programs that helped fund her care. The current U.S. regime may want to go back in time, but we won’t let them.
