Burnham said: "Russian agencies use every means at their disposal to spread lies & disinformation. They've used bots and fake websites. Falsified news articles. Forged branding of British organisations - including universities & BBC. Amplified far-right narratives” www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...

Russia's chilling reaction as Burnham slams Putin's 'lies and disinformation'
Mr Burnham did not hold back during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, accusing Russia of 'preying on people's fear' in a bombshell speech

A manifesto commitment to proportional representation, right up until proportional representation became less convenient. Apparently the Contract was subject to an implied term. 😉

Failed to attend a council meeting for six months. Lost his seat as a result. Now standing in the by-election created by losing his seat. British politics has finally achieved perpetual motion.

An effective ban on disabled people leaving Britain? You read that right, and we will not settle for it | Frances Ryan
This scandal shows there are many who don’t expect us to live rich lives – and that paternalism lives on in disability services, says Guardian columnist Frances Ryan

Retrospective legislation is a grave constitutional offence when it affects our £72 million. When it affects somebody else’s right to remain in the country, apparently it’s policy.

Apparently Britain is being “invaded”, and the great strategic threat is now people whose principal activity is preventing other people from drowning. One awaits Operation Sink the Lifeboats.

Jesus, the opening of Rusbridger’s article is savage. Farage presenting a programme about Farage, while Farage is himself the subject of the story. That’s approaching Being John Malkovich levels of political broadcasting. 😏

This is the question worth asking. Not whether a policy makes an effective slogan, but what offence Parliament would actually create, what conduct would satisfy it, and how it would coexist with the law governing rescue at sea. Legislation does, inconveniently, require particulars.

There is something rather peculiar about presenting taxation as society’s debt to the gambling industry, rather than the gambling industry’s debt to society.

Imagine surveying housing costs, stagnant living standards, struggling public services and concluding that the damning symbol of Britain’s decline is… people bringing their lunch to work. Britain may yet recover from the packed lunch. Thoughts and prayers to the Telegraph at this difficult time.

Three days after the Thirlwall Inquiry detailed the NMC’s regulatory failings in the Letby case, perhaps the priority should be demonstrating that the regulator is fit for purpose — rather than finding new ways for registrants to demonstrate that they are.

National security may require secrecy. It does not confer a licence to mislead the courts. If the rule of law is inconvenient only when it constrains other people, it isn’t the rule of law.

One might reasonably expect political parties to exercise rather more curiosity about the company their major donors keep — and the litigation they choose to finance. Due diligence does seem terribly unfashionable.

Female-led dating appears to have confused worship with usefulness. Because I’m not having some beautifully cheekboned man prostrating himself at my feet if he can’t also fix rotten decking boards. Worship is all very well. Can he use a spirit level?

If £72m can arrive for one political party and the response is simply “those are the rules”, perhaps the rules are the problem. Democracy should not be an auction in which the largest private fortune buys the loudest political voice.

If the purpose was to make farmland less attractive as a tax shelter and more accessible to people who actually farm it, this is rather awkward evidence for the claim that the policy was simply an attack on farmers.

“Retrospective” is doing some very heavy lifting here. If the proposed change was known about months before the donations were made, this looks rather less like changing the rules after the event and rather more like somebody gambling that the rules wouldn’t change quickly enough.

There is something rather beautiful about deploying wealth as a demonstration of political power so ostentatiously that you accidentally create the consensus for limiting the political power of wealth.

Money can buy reach. It can buy advertising, algorithms, billboards and an enormous megaphone. What it cannot buy is competence, judgement or a workable programme for government. Eventually, somebody still has to answer the questions.

If a single billionaire can potentially transform a British election by routing hundreds of millions through a UK company, we do not have meaningful controls on political donations. This should not depend on whether we approve of the billionaire or the party. Close the loophole.

£24bn to profitable banks is a technical feature of monetary policy. Money for hospitals, schools, housing or universities is an unaffordable burden on the taxpayer. Funny how fiscal restraint always seems to know who it works for…

The irony isn’t that Osborne has “changed his mind” on Brexit. He hasn’t. It’s that the Cameron government tried to settle an internal Tory dispute with a binary referendum and no meaningful threshold for constitutional change. The gamble failed. The country has been paying for it ever since.

If the wealth that built a country house came from slavery, the East India Company or imperial exploitation, saying so isn’t “politicising” its history. It’s provenance. You don’t preserve history by editing out the bit that paid for the house…
