Study finds that when a network with low-dimensional structure receives outside input or is perturbed by noise, it can produce either high- or low-dimensional responses depending on the finer structure of the network and its input. Read the study: go.aps.org/4fT3NLA
Two plots showing the network response, z(t) at the top, and its norm, ∥z(t)∥ at the bottom, given an input aligned to the low-rank structure of the network, labeled aligned perturbation x = u, and a random input, x = urand. The norm of z is more than 11 times smaller in response to the aligned versus random perturbation. The local network input, shown as a purple line on the bottom, cancels with external input, shown in green above, to produce suppressed network responses, shown in blue above, in the direction of u.

Happy Monday! Come learn how jellyfish swim. In a review led by fluid dynamics maestro Alex Hoover, we outline how neuromechanical modeling will help us understand how modulation of neural activity allows jellyfish to jet and pirouette through fluids www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Figure 1. The fluid dynamics of jellyfish swimming. a) Minimum intensity projection of a video clip of swimming Clytia hemisphaerica recorded at 30 fps; dark spots capture trajectories of tentacle bulbs, mouth, and gonads over time. Blue outlines approximate the margin of jellyfish on the frame of maximum extent on two successive swim pulses; green arrow shows direction of swimming. b) Minimum intensity projection of the same animal during a period of turning, showing asymmetry in the movement of bulbs on the inside vs outside of the turn. c) 3D diagram of the bell of a swimming jellyfish, showing starting and stopping vortex rings and fluid flow into (blue) vs away from (purple) the bell during the passive energy recapture phase of swimming. d) Cross section of a swimming jellyfish showing fluid vorticity toward the end of a swim pulse relaxation phase, showing locations of the starting and stopping vortex rings and the boundary layer. e) Swim pulse dynamics of an oblate jellyfish under symmetric bell contraction, producing straight swimming. The starting vortex ring is generated by active muscle contraction of the bell (ii, purple arrows), while the stopping vortex ring is generated by passive elastic relaxation (iii-iv, green arrows) from the mesoglea. Forward motion during the relaxation phase arises from the interaction of the starting and stopping vortex rings, with the starting vortex ring pulling fluid away from the bell and the stopping vortex ring directing fluid into the subumbrellar cavity. f) Swim pulse dynamics under asymmetric bell contraction, producing turning. Initially at rest (i), the neuronal signal initiates a muscular contraction in the bell margin on the inside of the turn before a stronger contraction of the bell margin is observed on the outside of the turn (ii-iii, purple arrows). The corresponding passive restoration yields a stronger expansion of the bell margin on the outside of the turn (iv, green arrows).

Eye movements reveal representational geometry
Mental representations are the explanatory construct of the cognitive sciences, but there is no widely accepted characterization of how they cause behavior. Visual representational geometry can be quantified by similarity scores, but almost all methods require an explicit judgment. To examine how representations cause behavior by varying task demands, observers must perform different tasks while continuously reporting similarity, leading to dual-task interference. This study develops scanpaths as an implicit similarity measure, and uses representational similarity analysis to validate it. Observers searched for a target; fixations on distractors may reveal similarity. Similarity was also quantified by an odd-one-out task in the same participants, and ratings from different participants (Jiang et al. 2022). Representational geometries between tasks correlated. A generative model predicted first fixations in novel data. This double validation of the scanpath method opens the door to examining the causality of representations by determining if and how they vary with task demands. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

An image depicting the left hemisphere of the fsaverage brain three times; the top row shows the lateral view (three times), the bottom-row shows their medial view (three times). The left-most projection displays the 106 electrodes that encode syntactic information. The electrodes are widely distributed across the left hemisphere, with clusters in the anterior temporal lobe and the posterior temporal lobe/temporo-parietal junction, but also in the prefrontal cortex. The middle projection displays the 185 electrodes that encode lexical probabilistic information. There is a cluster of electrodes along the length of the superior temporal gyrus, and one in the inferior frontal gyrus. There are also electrodes in other areas of the cortex. The rightmost projection shows the 124 electrodes that encode both features. There are clusters in the superior- and middle temporal gyri, and also in the inferior frontal gyrus. There are also electrodes in other areas of the cortex.

Schematic of the experimental setup and our analysis. Mice experienced visual corridors containing leaf or circle patterns, with reward available only for one pattern in the rewarded cohort and no reward in the unrewarded cohort. Large-scale calcium imaging sampled neurons across V1 and higher visual areas before and after learning. Neural activity was organised into neuron × time × trial tensors and analysed with tensor component analysis. Example factors show differences between rewarded and unrewarded mice before versus after learning, including stronger separation of leaf and circle trials after rewarded learning.
