Excited to see this work published! We find that the brain codes semantic relationships similar to contextual LLMs (like GPT2) but unlike LLMs, uses contrastive coding to prevent confusion of highly similar words. Many thanks to the reviewers and BCM neurosurgery team! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New perspective piece out in @cp-neuron.bsky.social with Zaid Zada, @adelegoldberg.bsky.social, and Uri Hasson! We try to articulate some of our excitement about LLMs and discuss what kinds of insights they might provide into the neural computations supporting natural language in the human brain.

Rarely categorical, highly separable representations along the cortical hierarchy - Nature
Cortical circuits prioritize diversity over categorical structure, supporting a computational regime geared towards high-dimensional, highly separable neural representations.

A number simplex in the human medial temporal lobe
Humans handle numbers nimbly, suggesting a richer neural manifold structure than the prevalent mental number line model. In populations of medial temporal lobe (MTL) neurons in humans performing two s...

A geometric foundation for word meaning in the brain
In language models of word meaning, directions in the embedding space often correspond to semantic features that can be reused across different words. For example, a single direction corresponding to ...
