This is why I distrust the “screen free parents” groups. Not because I don’t think social media and phones can be issues. I do. But because they are weirdly well funded and refuse to discuss social issues, digital rights and how schools catalyse harm. Brianna was killed by another child not a phone

Want the shit in your google drive to load instantly again, instead of taking for-fucking-ever?
Open your gdrive (web OR app)

Gemini was checked "use as default" (and i sure the fuck didn't set it that way, this was a silent push)
Nuke that, and suddenly, folders that took up to a minute to populate and sort do so in a fraction of a second.

The framing of this story is terrible, because it tries to make the story about teens, when the actual story is that only the elderly answer cold calls while *everyone else* assumes (often correctly) that they're scam calls. "Old people use cellphones irresponsibly" doesn't appeal to RNZ's audience.
Teenagers no longer answer the phone: Is it a lack of manners or a new trend?

Despite teenagers seemingly having their phones glued to their hands - they won't answer them when they ring.

“I never answer calls unless it's my mum, or an emergency, like a surprise test at school, or a friend who freaks out about something,” says 15-year-old Léa with a laugh. Behind this seemingly trivial comment lies a deeper change than meets the eye. Phones, long considered the quintessential voice tools designed for live conversation, are now used less and less to actually make calls.Scam Scum: We're All Victims

They're going to try memory holing this later so you won't remember resistance. They did it with Ferguson over a decade ago, so thoroughly that a lot of Americans don't recall it. They did it with the BLM protests 5 years ago, less success but we'll see by 2030. They'll try again. Don't let them.

Dunno how some of you continually churn out online content these days, what follows took me four years of postgraduate study and 87,705 words to whittle down to something remotely shareable. Co-dhiù: here's my entire PhD thesis condensed to ten slides! (inspired by @chercywong.bsky.social)
My thesis in ten slides!

Settlers against colonialism? Education and organising in the Tiriti workers' movement

Dani Pickering (they/them, Pākehā-Gàidheal)Research #inspo

For my thesis I studied non-Māori Tiriti work, which I define broadly as any efforts by non-Māori to bring effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

I was inspired in part by own activist experiences in which Pākehā settlers (myself included) wring our hands over how we can do our bit for Tiriti justice. Often, these conversations arrive at a consensus that we simply "need to listen to Māori". While true, taken by itself this sentiment can also absolve us of the responsibility to make our own intellectual contributions at the T iriti table, where there is much work to be done.

I was (and am) concerned by the epistemic exploitation of Māori this dynamic implies.Movement-relevant theory

I was really determined with this research to make sure it was actually *useful* to Tiriti workers them/ourselves. Much "activist" scholarship I'd engaged with before had certainly had a critical veneer, but little by way of usability to somebody actually doing that movement's work on the ground.

To avoid a similar outcome, my research was co-designed alongside Māori and non-Māori Tiriti workers alike, who helped ensure that my work could balance the academic requirements of the PhD with the strategic needs of the movement. What I/we did

- Interviewed 25 Tiriti workers across a range of ages, genders, sexualities, ethnicities and locations across Aotearoa. Many--not all--of these considered themselves "Tiriti educators"
- Conducted a thematic analysis on transcripts of these interviews
- Invited participant input between iterations of this analysis to help steer it in a movement-relevant direction
- Wrote an 87,705-word thesis about it
