I think that the hands-on AI alignment stuff that philosophy was into a few years ago sits in the same bucket as effective altruism, just war theory, etc: it works as public rationalisation for the actions of people whose own reasoning is not primarily moral in nature.

If children had any political power, instead of being treated like property, we wouldn't be in such a mess. Exhibit A: Attacks on Critical Race Theory started in schools as "parents' rights" and book bans-- within 7 years, this morphed into an anti-DEI purge of adults in workplaces and academia.

Genuinely, upsettingly bad. I can enjoy a bad film, but this was ugly in a goofy, confusing way while trying to be deep, not remotely scary, and every single character seemed to be experiencing mundane reality for the first time (if their actions are anything to go by.)

I don't know if the court reporter who wrote this one up was trying to portray the police in the worst possible light, or if this was simply as bad as it sounds, but it's hard to read this and not think the jury must've misunderstood something. "Compliance punches" are not a special kind of punch.

The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.
