Meanwhile, there are a fair number of us who've been regular contributors in the teaching and learning section for years (a decade, in my case), and the CHE's editorial staff won't even answer our emails. The editor I worked with got reassigned, and I've been ghosted ever since.

so tired of this take. ask some conservatives if they want to make adjunct salaries and see how eager they are. gosh, i wonder why lots of left-leaning folks choose professions like teaching, counseling, and care work? must be indoctrination! no, we just give a shit about others and our world.

One of my daughters used the acronym TMI and my son, who had not heard of it and did not grasp how it's used asked what it meant. She said, "Too much information," and he began cracking up, saying, "Who says that?? 'Oh nO! You're telling me ToO mUcH iNfOrMaTion! Only tell me one fact a day!'"

Did you know? In the Victorian era, a widowed lighthouse keeper repeatedly rowed into the dangerous waters of New York Harbor to rescue people from drowning? Kate Walker spent decades at the isolated Robbins Reef Lighthouse. #Victorian #history #lighthouses
It shows a photograph of Kate Walker reading a book from a rocking chair as she tended her lighthouse.

When I was working in Boston, I got to do this unpaid Harvard fellowship that required you to show up a few times a month. I had no idea how people who did not live there managed to pull it off. But it turned out many of their parents had also passed through Harvard and had a pied a terre to spare.

Possibly just a stoner thought, but has anyone else thought of the story in Queneau’s Exercises de Style as a kind of prosaic, deflationary rewriting of “À Une Passante”? -In the street vs on a bus -Majestic femme vs ridiculous homme -Feston/ourlet vs hat with cord -no 2nd meeting vs 2nd encounter

This is the crux of the issue. It’s not just enough to “vote harder”; the Democratic Party leadership has to fix their hearts. But they are completely beholden to the consultant class…which is mainly focused on raising money…which requires that their donors know, “nothing will fundamentally change”

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
