Map locations are central to my Comp II class, in which I teach 75 poems and short stories from 50 countries. Every selection has an author page with a map. Icebreakers are African proverbs with maps of language regions (Wolof, Bantu, Tamasheq, &c.).

I saw this a the Dallas Star Trek Convention in October 1976. My mother and I looked at each other and snickered for at least 15 seconds. It seemed godawful, even to 11-year-old me - - although it did suffer by being shown after the trailer for Infra-Man.

Dewey is aces, and I’ve also found really interesting things to crib from Josiah Royce, believe it or not. Explaining conflict in terms of his Philosophy of Loyalty works, and getting the class onboard with being a self-sustaining “community of interpretation” (including the authors we read) is fun.

God help me I’m reading Katabasis by R.F. Kuang and I made an involuntary mental leap reading this passage. #cowtools

My favorites are Simon from appliancepartspros dot com and the nameless bearded man who was obviously taping in an illegal auto chop shop, but explained how to reorder the blades in a Prius battery (to lengthen battery life) in a kind of Mister Rogers voice that made it seem like tying your shoes.

Currently rereading Stuart Hampshire’s Justice Is Conflict as prep for teaching Comp 101 and he makes the same point. The difference is that humans collectively develop mutually agreed-upon procedures for adversarial argument, weighing evidence, and “reasoning in conditions of uncertainty.”

“Post a poster you used to have on your wall.” I had 3 of these, trimmed to show the painting only, with the 3rd cut in half and taped to 1/2 a Lichtenstein poster. I found a piece of pipe about 6 ft long and wedged between a couch and an end table. The idea was to have it look like a slot machine.
