@ashleyrattner.bsky.social won an award tonight for her brilliant article about Benjamin Lundy in Early American Lit, but the real award was when she talked our septuagenarian & v cool tour guide into giving us a sneaky tour of the tunnels underneath the Oneida commune. He also let us into his apt.

If that portion of the Snapchat texts reading “Shop still open?” and another guy replying “yea” is legit, idk what to feel except deeply demoralized. A CBS News reporter has the story, though I don’t feel like linking.

Professoring is so weird, like I took a bunch of classes in linguistics and then I taught a bunch of courses in linguistics and then wrote a two-hundred page thesis in linguistics and now like a quarter of my job is just making decisions about university and departmental curriculum

I hope people can see that this is the logical end point of the "measure the value of disciplines by ROI were R is conceived solely in terms of $" thinking that has, quite frankly, been enthusiastically embraced by both parties, to the detriment of students, faculty, and democracy itself.

between this story & the one about Maddie Kowalski and the “burnerverse” a few weeks ago, it’s clear that frats remain among this country’s most cherished rape infrastructure (one type of infrastructure the U.S. loves to maintain)

Wifey flop era: “while romantic love, at its best, should make us love the outside world more, finding the love of her life seems to have made Swift more vindictive…about as much depth & artistic value as Swift pointing to her 700K rock and shouting, “that’s my husband!” as Kelce scores a touchdown”

Everyone knows you shouldn't represent yourself in court; humanists defending the humanities is bad for the humanities and bad for the defense of the humanities and that is why they want us to do it (not to say we never should—but we should get real about why we're being asked).

More wifework: “men don’t seem to realize how hard women work at keeping friendships alive. I liken it to stoking a fire at a campsite: we gather kindling, gauge the wind, blow on the embers. Some men just watch the flames diminish to a flicker…& rely on their wives for any shred of a social plan.”

Hey! Thje new issue of College Lit is excellent: "[This] model of infrastructural mediation...hardly represents an abandonment of materialism; rather it sharpens our understanding of materiality, of material history being patterned as much by abstractions as it is by works of concrete and steel."

my standard A to the “how else can it be done??” Q: my uni doesn’t require book for tenure. We also have a (too narrow) CBA pathway for some adjunct colleagues to convert to TT. But we’re a 4:4 public regional, so generally treated w polite distaste when people want to talk ‘real’ tenure reform

Celeste-Marie Bernier presents the first standalone biography of Anna Murray Douglass, wife and co-revolutionary of Frederick Douglass, honoring her history-making role as a campaigner, liberator, and freedom-fighter. Read a sample for free now: buff.ly/4etAj6v
Cover of Anna Murray Douglass: Biography of a Revolutionary by Celeste-Marie Bernier. The cover is a photograph of Anna Murray Douglass as a duotone in pink and red. There are three squares made of transparent gold triangle patterns overlayed. The title is written large in a bold white script across the cover. The subtitle is smaller below and aligned left. The authors name appears in the top left corner of the cover in white.

"virality follows a specific pattern: salacious gossip about a college girl’s sex life, or nude photos and videos of her, make their way to YikYak or Snapchat before being disseminated by burner accounts on social media platforms...with aggregation websites...amplifying the victim’s humiliation."

Pedagogy is not some new, unsolved problem awaiting its Silicon Valley disruptor. If you want good teaching in any given subject, it’s there to be had. If you just don’t want to pay for it, then all we’re really talking about is how much you want something for nothing. That’s nothing new, either.
