It is my son’s sleepover and already his glasses are broken and someone left the door open so he may have lost his cat. He is very upset. Please send the good.

"A lot has changed since the American Library Association was established in 1876 — even just over the past decade. The library has gone from a building full of books to arguably the most versatile civic center in any community lucky enough to have one." nyti.ms/47zF62M

Maybe time for those who don't experience this directly to return to this thread (which I posted when PTSD was being weaponized to relieve Graham Platner of responsibility for his actions).

Sometimes life doesn't send you answers. It sends you a cat that lies down next to you and makes everything a little easier.
Jinx the tabby bobtail cat with her two front paws curled under her belly. She’s sound asleep.

When I was an undergraduate and a dude tried to sexually assault me, a male friend noticed, pulled the guy off of me, and literally threw him into a wall. Which is the start of how I would like such men to be treated no matter what fancy school they attend.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

THE times are disgusting enough, surely, for those who long for peace and truth. But self-disgust also is an injury: the coming of bodily uncertainty with age and wear, forgetfulness of things that ought to be remembered, remembrance of things best forgot.
Forgive this fragmentary life.

My seventy-seven-year-old father put his reading glasses on to help my mother do the buttons on the back of her dress… —Jackie Kay, “George Square” from LIFE MASK, @bloodaxebooks.bsky.social 2005 Today, 21 September, is the International Day of Peace #peace #poem #poetry www.un.org/en/observanc...
George Square
by Jackie Kay

My seventy-seven-year-old father
put his reading glasses on
to help my mother do the buttons
on the back of her dress.
‘What a pair the two of us are!’
my mother said, ‘Me with my sore wrist,
you with your bad eyes, your soft thumbs!’

And off they went, my two parents
to march against the war in Iraq,
him with his plastic hips, her with her arthritis
to congregate at George Square where the banners
waved at each other like old friends, flapping,
where they’d met for so many marches over their years,
for peace on earth, for pity’s sake, for peace, for peace.

Maybe if elite schools weren’t pushing AI and bowing down to the prez and closing libraries and writing centers and laying off fac/staff at every turn I’d be willing to take their nominal devotion to academic standards in the form of The Book seriously. But right now? Nope, not buying it.

A book should NOT be req'd for tenure--esp now w/ the inordinate pressures on peer review. It puts untenable demands on scholars & publishers AND enables tenure committees to shirk their duty & blame presses for killing jobs/careers instead of actually engaging scholars' work. It's infuriating.
