🪼 Your tax dollars paid a scientist to squeeze jellyfish through cheesecloth. Osamu Shimomura processed tens of thousands on an NSF grant to understand why they glow. He found a protein that glowed green under UV light. Called it "green protein." Nobody cared. For decades.

Interestingly, cathepsin B expression was also enriched in mice and human microglia. Importantly in regions of high neuronal turnover similar to zebrafish. Cultured mouse microglia fed apoptotic neurons revealed fewer phagocytic events and reduced overall phagocytosis. 4/5

Our scRNA dataset showed that NAMS were enriched in lysosomal proteases including cathepsin B suggesting functional roles in phagocytosis. Using a combination of pharmacological and genetic models to target ctsb in zebrafish, we found that microglia acidification and phagocytosis is altered. 3/5

We had hints from my initial study that found a population of microglia enriched in regions, where neuronal turnover is high in the developing #zebrafish brain. We named them neurogenic associated microglia (NAMS) www.nature.com/articles/s41... 2/5

Astrocytes do so much more than any of us thought - they even communicate among specific brain regions across hemispheres! The journey to this paper spanned nearly a decade, but I'm most excited to see what everyone else does with the tools we've built. There's so much for all of us to explore!
