It never gets old. #primates #resistance
A text excerpt from Earnest Hooten's 1942 primate textbook, Man's Poor Relations, includes a subsection titled "How Howlers Behave Toward Human Beings"

Highlighted text in the paragraph quotes Ray Carpenter: "I would usually be sitting quietly observing the animals as they in the trees above me. Either seen or unseen, an individual would slowly approach to a place directly above me or as near-by as possible, and then would release excrement, either urine or fecal matter or both."

The first sentence reads: "The commonest reaction of a group of howlling monkeys to the presence of man is to howl at him."

I created this collection of common brain models in neuroscience, all to scale Across species, brains share fundamental principles and many homologous regions But as size increases, complexity and connectivity change. We need the full spectrum, from flies to rodents, non-human primates, and humans
A scaled collection of brains from common neuroscience model organisms arranged side by side. From left to right: a large human brain and a smaller macaque brain on the top row; below them progressively smaller brains from a marmoset, rat, mouse, zebrafish, and a tiny Drosophila (fruit fly). A coin provides size reference. An inset shows a small, irregularly shaped brain organoid.

Nice! I presented a Bayesian poster in 2004… and now I do naturalistic wireless ephys and behavior to study navigation in rats and primates. Not too bad! 😁 It may look like Bayesian modeling and information theory peaked, but I think that they became the background, and are now simply assumed.

Chapter 1 – Why do we feel dizzy when turning? This comes from how the inner ear’s rotation sensors (the semi-circular canals) work mechanically. The short videos below (and the next one) explain why. (And yes, that video is low-quality, but it's actually me on the chair 😅)

When news broke of an explosion inside Harvard’s neurobiology building early Saturday morning, every scientist who works with monkeys felt it—an involuntary jolt, a spike of cortisol, the silent thought: what if it had been us? Neither animals nor people were hurt, thankfully. It doesn’t appear to have been an attack. But it didn’t matter. For those of us who work with monkeys, the fear is always near the surface.
