A brown penguin chick of some kind. It looks very much like a man in a suit. It is bedraggled and miserable

A black hole in the early universe? Sometimes I like to imagine that I operate a telescope, not a microscope 😁. The hole in the middle of the image is actually a blood vessel. The stars are astrocytes🟡 in the human brain, interacting with beta-amyloid🔵. The brain is from a donor with #Alzheimer.

Almost every line of this story would have been simply unbelievable a few months ago: —Pioneering cancer researcher; —*Arrested* at airport in Boston; —Now indefinite ICE detention in Louisiana; —"Crime": not declaring some frog-embryo samples for research. Read it. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

New images could change cancer diagnostics, but ICE detained the Harvard scientist who analyzes them
Without scientist Kseniia Petrova’s expertise, no one can fully unlock the data’s potential, putting crucial advancements in early cancer detection at risk.

Tonight an unbelievable **34,000 people** gathered for our Denver rally to take on billionaires and win our country back. This was the largest political gathering in Denver since Obama in 2008. Also bigger than the 2024 DNC. And the largest ever rally in Bernie’s career (and obviously, mine too).

Attracting talent, offering safe spaces is good. If it goes hand in hand with extra resources for science / education. If not, these plans will create extra competition in already precarious systems. The fact is, many European countries cut on research spending. www.politico.eu/article/euro...

As announced in Budget 2024, the scholarship and fellowship programs administered by the three federal research funding agencies – the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) – have been streamlined into a new harmonized talent program called the Canada Research Training Awards Suite (CRTAS) that will open for applications in summer 2025.

From my PhD advisor @kenmiller.bsky.social at Columbia. These are the grants that funded my PhD.
So the NIH grant terminations at Columbia turned out to be:
-- all training grants (T series), which were all required to have extensive sections addressing diversity
-- grad student and postdoc fellowships (F series)
-- center and core grants (P series), including a cancer center, Alzheimer's center, diabetes center and more, and the vision core grant Michael Goldberg has been PI of for 17 years that provides shared facilities (machine shop, imaging, ...) for vision researchers
-- a smattering of individual research grants, apparently targeting anything to do with covid, vaccines, or HIV, and including one study with title involving study of diverse tissues, i.e. with the verboten word diverse.

“Since the entire staff was also placed on administrative leave, we have been locked out of our computers, and have no chance to assist in an orderly transition in our work.” Sounds super efficient and safe
A letter to the American People:
For over 11 years, 18F has been proudly serving you to make government technology work better. We are nonpartisan civil servants. 18F has worked on hundreds of projects, all designed to make government technology not just efficient but effective, and to save money for American taxpayers.
However, all employees at 18F - a group that the Trump Administration GSA Technology Transformation Services Director called "the gold standard" of civic tech - were terminated today at midnight ET.This was a surprise to all 18F staff and our agency partners. Just yesterday we were working on important projects, including improving access to weather data with NOAA, making it easier and faster to get a passport with the Department of State, supporting free tax filing with the IRS, and other critical projects with organizations at the federal and state levels.
All of that work has now abruptly come to a halt. Since the entire staff was also placed on administrative leave, we have been locked out of our computers, and have no chance to assist in an orderly
transition in our work. We don't even have access to our personal employment data. We're supposed to return our equipment, but can't use our email to find out how or where.

“I will de-nazify shit, but I will not re-nazify shit” should be somehow crafted into The Constitution. People seem to have lost this concept. Growing up in the punk scene, we had on occasion a person who would want to be edgy and put a swastika on something. That was absolutely radioactive.
