I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇

very very cool words from none other than Santiago Ramón y Cajal in his work, “Advice for a Young Investigator” - to me, applicable to almost everything in life. respect is important, but self-respect even more so 😊
Excerpt from Chapter 2 “Beginner’s Traps”. It reads, “Undue admiration of authority. The most important problems are already solved. Preoccupation with applied science. Perceived lack of ability.

I believe that excessive admiration for the work of great minds is one of the most unfortunate preoccupations of intellectual youth- along with a conviction that certain problems cannot be attacked, let alone solved, because of one’s relatively limited abilities.

Inordinate respect for genius is based on a commendable sense of fairness and modesty that is difficult to censure. However, when foremost in the mind of a novice, it cripples initiative and prevents the formulation of original work.”

I had a great time taking part in the open day last Saturday! Working in the MaxLab was a great experience (&humbling, the kids were so smart 🧠). I hope they learned 1/3 much about the science of the senses as I did German! 🧪 Thank for joining us, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did 😊

Working alongside such kind and talented colleagues, who are more than happy to share their knowledge and help, has made me feel even more motivated to stay in this field. As a first-gen “academic” it is really hard to feel like you belong in academia, but this lab has done that for me 😊
