There has been a lot of talking about AI on here today, and if you're as fed up of it as I am, I'd like to recommend the Doodl app. Daily prompts, no pressure, art générated by real humans in all their messy glory. Much better than doomscrolling while we wait for IT to happen.

The rider is a short and skinny dyke with short brown hair and glasses wearing dark riding pants, a white T-shirt shirt, and a vest bearing the Dykes on Bikes motorcycle club. The use of "dyke" in this context is how the rider self-identifies and is therefore not a slur when used here.

I had the same thought this weekend when browsing in the gorgeous Leakey’s bookshop in Inverness. Two whole shelves of Dornford Yates bestsellers which I suspect no one has opened for 50 years. Nice editions, mind you, if anyone wants to give him a whirl

A big problem is that people aren't going to be able to take public transport if it's late, early, unreliable, slow, expensive, etc. and currently that's most local bus services. They treat them like a last resort or luxury not a service, but you can't be late to work, or spend hours to be on time.

Genuine AI q: do we have any good practice gudelines and/or methodologies for accuracy testing humanities projects? E.g I get gen AI to scan a load of wills & make a database of bequests/value/gender/location etc - obvs I have no idea what it made up. So how many instances “should” I manually check?

Elisabeth van Houts’ article in vol 10 really inspired me, and I’m so pleased to have built on her work on the Ship List #MedievalSky

On my first big overseas client conference, I was at a dinner seated next to a drunk client who kept trying to fondle me under the table. I was young, distressed, and had no idea what to do. I moved my legs as far away from him as I could, moving into the space of the man next to me, who then started patting my legs! The Regional Manager was a French woman who caught my eye, gestured for me to go to the bathroom and when I came back had switched chairs with me. What happed next was epic. A few minutes after I sat back down, she raised her hand with his hand captured in hers and announced loudly "Does anyone know whose hand this is? I found it in my lap." There was dead silence at the table. She threw his hand back at him and said calmly "next time I pick it up with my fork." Then she started a new conversational thread and things moved on. After the meeting she found me, gave me a hug, and said seriously "Never be afraid to make some noise. It is their shame, not yours."

Art, literature and music are ways we express our human experience. Generative AI has nothing to say. Its remixed slop can only ever be, to quote Shakespeare, “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

A County Cork #painting, "Bandon I". The first time I painted the west Cork town, well it was a long time ago and I can't honestly remember what I was thinking. Which probably explains why I can't simply repeat it. I like it though. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format, very loosely painted in acrylics on canvas. Looking down a street of mostly three-story retail buildings, from left in the foreground to right in the distance. Right-hand side buildings are all in very dark blue shadow and throws a darker triangle of very dark purple, almost black, shadow onto the street which on the rest of the street is sunlit in lilac. Buildings on the left are shops, with many having awnings creating shadows of very dark purple windows and doors. Upper stories are mostly mid-purples with some yellow and pale pink. Several cars are parked on the left side (a double yellow line is on the right side), starting with a red car, then a blue before they become indistinguishable from the dark purple shadows they cast. Power lines arc across the street. All over there are flecked details of pale blue and deep red. Loose broken dark lines are painted as partial outlines around details. The sky is a painterly canary yellow. I took this photo of the painting before I added my signature

Proposal: the fines levied on the water companies for serious environmental failure like this should be set at a sum equal to what the company paid in dividends + any executive bonuses, in the previous year (since this is a good estimate of the ‘spare’ money sloshing about) for a first offence …

George is quite right on this. I discovered via FOI requests that just 5% of all woodland creation grants go to support natural regeneration of trees, and 95% to tree planting. I’ll continue to push DEFRA to fix this. www.theguardian.com/environment/... bsky.app/profile/geor...

Opponents of rent controls typically argue that rent controls would lead to landlords selling up. Of course that presents risks. But it also presents a historic opportunity. Because when a landlord sells, the home does not vanish – only the owner changes!

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

If you define the centre as the far right, then there's no far right problem in Europe. The more likely conclusion is unthinkable: that centrists like Rachman have actually radicalised into the far right.
The Italian left points to Meloni’s harsher policies on immigration and asylum as indications that she retains far-right instincts. But almost all European governments are now searching for ways to limit the flow of asylum seekers. This is a response to growing voter unease — so arguably an expression of democracy rather than its negation.

Le Pen has been moderating her party’s image for many years — shedding many of its more extreme policies and associations. In the process, she has broken with her own father, the founder of the party, and ditched plans to leave the European single currency.
