There are Second World War pilots that fascinate me and those that fascinate me and frustrate me, as I want to know more about them! Hello Jellico Scoon, subject of one of the more famous propaganda photos, Spitfire and Typhoon driver, and was even featured on the BBC.

IWM Caption: West Indians in the Royal Air Force: A Trinidad accountant, Jellicoe Scoon, recently arrived in England as a Royal Air Force recruit. Aircraftman Scoon was accepted as a pilot, completed elementary flying school training with at least fifty hours to his credit, and was then sent to Service Flying Training School. IWM (CH 5213)

Note from Matt: Scoon was from Grenada and not Trinidad.

The Chronicles of the air war in North Africa and the Mediterranean were recounted in a complete manner in a series of books in English, Mediterranean Air War, by Christopher Shores together with various other authors including the Italians Malizia and Massimello.

The current book, in English language, concentrates on a period of the conflict, July 1942, when the Axis troops under Rommel's leadership sought to break through at El Alamein to reach Alexandria, but were stopped by the English. The seesaw of the ground combat was reflected also in the air, in which both sides sought, without success, superiority over the battlefield, with hundreds of aeral sorties each day and the loss of over 200 planes between both sides.

This is a colossal work of 490 pages that presents the events day by day with an absolute precision thanks to work in the historical archives of the United Kingdom, completely, and those of other nations involved, including the Italian war diaries at the Historical Office of the Italian Air Force.

Each day we therefore have the ground operations, providing the general frame and a detailed presentation of all encounters in the air, hour by hour, was ample quotes from comet reports and tables that compile the data and provide an overview of the missions. The events of this are not described day by day but practically hour by hour. At the end of the book there are various tables, recounting comets the orders of battle, the numbers of missions and the losses.

This isn't light reading, but it is admirable. It is not heavily illustrated, but there are sufficient numbers of photos and various German maps of the period together with other documents. The price is justified for a book that like no other merits to be considered the definitive work on the subject.

It amuses me that people still think that their airline's crew is there to help them outside of the aircraft. There was a person at LHR Ops whose only priority was getting them away from the passengers, into a hotel and starting their rest asap. The passengers are someone else's problem.

The End of Everything is one of the few books I've started this year and never finished. The writing is beautiful but waffly to the point of having no point whatsoever. It is a textbook example of an author "I have an idea!" and having no idea how to finish it. It will hands down win the Booker.
