Can’t find a good picture of it, but Michael Caine as Harry Palmer wore a rather arresting rollneck jumper under a jacket in early scenes of Funeral in Berlin (1966) The Deighton spy thrillers were supposed to be the anti-Bond but they slipped up on the wardrobe, which was far too stylish

"Nice people made the best Nazis. My mom grew up next to them. They got along, refused to make waves, looked the other way when things got ugly and focused on happier things than “politics.” They were lovely people who turned their heads as their neighbors were dragged away. You know who weren’t nice people? Resisters."

All these running/chasing activities are a great way of letting sighthounds exercise the instincts that have been bred into them over centuries, in a safe, controlled environment that doesn't harm them or other animals. It really is wonderful to see them when that purpose kicks in

Lure coursing favours dogs that can change direction quickly as well as just run fast, and Nikolai always seemed to be good at that. It was more mentally stimulating than the straight running. Now silken windhounds are a recognised UK breed there'll be more opportunities for them, but too late for N

Here's one of him lure coursing - this is where the lure describes a circuit rather than just a straight line so the dog has to follow sharp changes of direction. He had done all his trials and was cleared for competition, just as the club closed. I think he'd have been good at it

For health reasons we thought it best to draw a line under the competition now. It's a great place to stop with the fastest veteran dog prize, and although the vet says we don't need to restrict his exercise at all yet, it can be very intense. We'll still give him the opportunity to stretch his legs

Still coming to terms a little bit with Nikolai's racing career being over. It was only ever for fun and we always said we'd stop the moment he didn't seem to be enjoying it, but with circumstances as they are... Here he is tackling the bend at Harvel, and the slo-mo shows he was built for this...

Fwiw see p.21, Burgi/Wolff, Rehabilitation of homosexual men convicted pursuant to Section 175 of the German Criminal Code www.antidiskriminierungsstelle.gov.de/SharedDocs/d...
‘Sections 175, 175a RStGB were however not mentioned in this list of laws, and as a result these provisions remained in force. One consequence of this was that many of the homosexual men freed from concentration camps at the end of the war were returned to prison, because the custodial sentence imposed on them under Section 175 RStGB was regarded as not yet served’Sources for the paragraph quoted in previous image

Like, look at this. Learned zero from Iraq, Afghanistan, fucking WW2 (also note the continual reference to England/the English, e.g. no transphobia comes from Scotland, they're all victims)
No matter how badly things are going they will get worse if we don't keep the English in check

Contrast the police statements about the Dover blockade yesterday with the Just Stop Oil protests in 2022
No arrests made during Dover protest, Kent Police says

13:34 5 September
Kent Police has issued a statement following the disruption in Dover earlier today.
It says officers "responded to a spontaneous protest" during Saturday morning, adding "no arrests were made".
"Traffic is flowing normally, and all involved had dispersed by midday," it addsThe Met Police said 35 people had been arrested in response to the disruption.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said the action was "criminality", not protest, and pledged to bring those involved to justice as quickly as possible.
"This was a very significant and co-ordinated effort to cause massive disruption to the entirety of the M25," he added.

And this I saw recently put me in mind of furores about laying wreaths on terrorist graves
As recently as July 2006 a group of right-wing Israelis, including Benjamin Netanyahu, attended a commemoration organised by the ‘Menachem Begin Heritage Centre’ for the sixtieth anniversary of the bombing of the King David Hotel, which they insisted on labelling an act of ‘freedom fighting’. A plaque commemorating the attack attracted an official response from the British ambassador in Tel Aviv, who urged that it was offensive to celebrate an act of terrorism.
