A County Waterford #painting "Bunmahon" came out of a day I was cycling along the Copper Coast when two small boats having a conversation in the mouth of the Mahon river insisted I stop and think about life for a while. #SpéirGhorm #Art #TidesOutTuesday #ArtYear

Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Two rowing boats tied in water in the near centre of the picture. Grasses are in foreground in clumps reaching out into the water. Sand and dune grass is behind the boats and on the right. A grass-topped promontory of lilac sheer rock about 100 metres past stretching out from the left edge to the sea which is just visible behind the dunes by the right edge. The open sea is also visible in a small gap between the dune grass and right end of the rock face. The rock face has countless dark vertical lacerations, and several patches of grass on its side. Cloudless sky is pale blue, water is cobalt, grass green-grey with orange and yellow details, and sand is pink and lilac in sun, blue and purple in shade. My #painting "The Long Walk II" was painted when me and my bicycle sat in Galway by Claddagh Quay. Rain then softly landed on my face. And made the painting look funky. Then it got much heavier and washed all the paint off the canvas. So I returned the next day and started over. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

A Dublin #painting "Ormond Quay" came from a time when I would spend hours walking the streets of the city centre and then paint them in my sleep. And they were all like this. In reality this was the only one that I actually painted; the rest are still sitting in my head. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

The one on the left edge has five storeys, the rest have four. They are greys, oranges, and greens, with dark blue roofs looking like hats and punctuate by chimneys of pale pink. In front of the buildings is the granite river wall across the road rendered in orange, with the white/grey railings of the boardwalk attached and its support bars in the maroon shadows of the river wall underneath above the grey-green river. A little #painting that took a long time. "Flower, Mountain" came from when I lived in north Donegal and with my little dog would walk for hours under very dark clouds. This little plant with its golden flowers coped a lot better than either of us did with the very strong wind. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

A #painting of some birds. "Rooks, Wires, Hedgerow" came out of a menacing afternoon when I cycled around West Cork. The coastline looked magnificent but I spent a lot of time looking at rooks. Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mixed media paper. Against a dark cloudy sky of lilac and blue a dark wooden telegraph pole rises from the busy thicket of a hedgerow and tilts to the left. On the wires it supports, both left and right, and on the supporting wires, are about two dozen rooks. Birds and pole are silhouetted; hedgerow is a mess of tangled lines, mostly black but with some blue, pale green and dark red also. The hedgerow runs across the full width of the painting, occupying about a quarter of the bottom albeit slightly sloping up from left to right, much like the wires at the top of the picture attached to either side of the main pole. Yesterday I finished Joseph Conrad's "The Secret Agent" so today is one of those good days where I get to visit my to-be-read piles and choose a book. While I really enjoyed "The Secret Agent" I found it very sad - which is how I find all spy stories I read or watch, even though I like them.

Open sketchbook with loose watercolour sketch in landscape format of blue-grey derelict single-storey cottage with blue-grey corrugated roof, both windows and door boarded up, all behind a low pebble-dashed green-grey wall with wooden panels blocking entrance through central small gateway and over wall left of the gate. Brambles and bushes grow behind and over panels and block access over wall right of gate with some wooden posts also. A newer fence blacks off access at left end. Roof has brown-edging strips at both ends, and three grey chimneys. Weeds grow in places along bottom of wall and fence. Sky and background left a blank white. A #painting from the west of Ireland again. "Broadhaven Bay" came from a time I was cycling up the very top of north Mayo and as I cycled alongside the bay I was arrested by its patterns and colours so I just looked. Also, the wind was fantastic which always helps me to stop. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in mostly flat acrylics. A field of yellow orange in the foreground runs across the bottom in a very narrow triangular wedge. It has a blue-poled wire fence running along its edge and just behind it on the left is a small pile of wine-coloured turf. Beyond it running across the picture in a wide band is a teal inlet, with rocky small cliff edges which are dark purple and wine on the right half, and further back on the left half they are lilac and white with a pink strand in a small cove. The cliffs are topped with a patchwork of varying green fields leading up a slope to a small settlement of little white houses at the top from which the blue hedgerows radiate down. Another west of Ireland #painting. "Galway Bay Rocks I" came from a moment where I was cycling from Galway city to Connemara and stopped when I saw a bunch of kids sitting on a large boulder. It made me remember how fantastic it was to be young. Beside that scene was this one. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Foreground is edge of ochre beach running across full width of painting, then a band of purple rocks of all sizes including one large boulder to the right, with all rocks having violet shadow sides facing viewer. Beyond the band of rocks the bay is teal, with a criss-crossing pattern of white ripples in the near part, and darker teal in the distance. Two more strips of lilac rocks with dark blue shadows stretch out from the left edge tapering to almost the right edge. On horizon is a large grey mountain cropped on the left near its peak and on the right close to its lowest slope by the water. It has feint maroon striping and as it descends from its peak by the left edge down to the horizon at the right side of the painting, its edges are curved at different layers representative of the strata of rock that form the mountains in County Clare. A #painting, "Galway, Cross Street Upper". When I worked for a bank more than one person said I should get a dog, and a string, and move to Galway. But those weren’t nice people. I love streets. A #painting from the south of Ireland. "Passage East" came out of a time I visited the Waterford village by bicycle, and this was how it greeted me as I rolled off the ferry across Waterford Harbour from the Wexford side. Drinking tea here was like drinking tea in a fairy tale. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

A Liverpool #painting. "The Pier Head from the Tate", painted because the city is my second home. The Pier Head is painted to death by everyone but I just love the Port of Liverpool Building - from all angles. I'm looking forward to the Tate returning to the Albert Dock for this view again. #ArtYear

On far left across the water is tip of the Wirral peninsula in pale purple. Sky is painterly orange into yellow. Foreground has shadow from Albert Dock falling on other dock buildings before where the Mersey waters enter the dock and beyond where there are more older red-brick dock buildings and the modern buildings of, close to the river, the very pale grey Museum of Liverpool with its huge blue window facing the viewer, and to its right along side the Port of Liverpool Building the angular black glass Mann Island building slopes up to the painting's right edge as it glistens in purples and blues. A #painting. "From Grattan Bridge" I painted to capture two of the iconic features of Dublin city, the Hippocampus lamps of Grattan Bridge and the arch of the pedestrian Ha'penny Bridge up the Liffey from it, because they both scream town. And sometimes I need a good scream. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

In the foreground on the right is an ornate green metal lamp-post attached to the bridge. It has two mythological hippocamp sea-horses facing out to the sides with their backs to the post and tails curled upward. Like the bridge it has highlights of smokey blue and shadows and detail work of navy. The sky is a smudgy yellow over orange and the river reflects this as a laterally stroked golden orange. Up river in off-white are two metal pedestrian bridges, the furthest one markedly arched. Further beyond is the tall square tower block of Liberty Hall on the left with its horizontal stripes of blue windows and white concrete topped off with a pale green zig-zagging hat, and on the right of the river is a lower broader office square block of O'Connell Bridge House and its vertical stripes of windows and panels. Other buildings further away or along the sides behind the sea-horses are sketchy suggestions including the Custom House and the glass blocks of the Irish Financial Services Centre. A #painting of a hairy beast to help anyone feel a smidgeen better. "Bovine I" came out of a time I stayed as a guest in a cottage and across the road were these bullocks who I would talk to every so often. They told me they were against genocide. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Head and shoulders of a long-haired bullock looking directly at viewer, with ears straight out horizontally, and also horizontal just above them, the truncated stumps of chiseled-looking horns. The animal is cream coloured in sunshine on right side with lots of strokes of coffee, orange and purple indicating direction, longer on individual hairs on upper half of face where there are swirling patterns. Left hand side is in shadow so is mostly blue on the neck and face, including the nostrils and inside the ears (with frizzy cream backlit fringing), and purple on the body. A #painting from the mountains in the east of Ireland now. One day a long time ago I cycled 24 km to Glenasmole Valley, where I painted this view of Bohernabreena Reservoir and Kippure, before handing "Glenasmole" to its new owner and cycling another 24 km on into Kildare. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

In amongst the bad news of your stream here's a pause. A picture of me before the beard. It's The Day The Family Wore Pink. I wasn't in charge of wardrobe. Kudos to the mother though for matching us with our lace curtains. #SpéirGhorm

A #painting of the west coast of Ireland. "Cliffs of Moher II" is a #painting done after several trips to the iconic cliffs in County Clare back when I was so young I didn't think twice about crawling to the edge. You couldn't pay me to do that now. Still, good times. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Wide landscape format in acrylics on canvas panel. Under a golden yellow sky, darker towards orange higher up, are flat-topped sheer cliffs coming out from the left edge and almost in the distance reaching the right edge. They are rendered in dark blue and in three sections receding, with each section coming out from behind the one to its left, and rendered less dark, the furthest one away close to the right edge being a smokey dark grey-blue, whereas the closest section, by the left edge, is such a dark blue it is not far off black. Each section has a slight suggestion of horizontal strata, and the closest one on the left has a slight dip at its top revealing a glimpse of a sliver of a grass top rendered in green. The ocean is a smokey powder blue except where it froths into a soft series of whites close to the base of the cliffs. The horizon is just above halfway up the painting and close to the top of the furthest section of the cliffs. I took this photo of the painting before I added my signature.

A Donegal #painting, "Errigal". This picture of the iconic mountain in the northwest of Ireland was painted during the first of my 3 annual 24-hour live video-streaming painting social media yokes. Looking at it makes me nostalgic for Donegal and for painting live on video. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Along the horizon are blue mountains, the most prominent being a pyramidal almost stand-alone one on the left in pale blues, greens and purples, all in strokes coming down from the top. It is noticeably paler closer to its peak. In front of it is a narrow very dark horizontal band of blue and magenta, and in front of that is an expanse of flat land comprised of ochre and red and yellow horizontal strokes, suggestive of bog. The foreground in front of that across the bottom of the painting is blotches of blue suggestive of foliage and shadows with lots of stalks of white and green. The sky is a blotchy mix of yellows with some white mixed in indicating clouds. I took this photo of the painting before adding my signature.

A Dublin #painting. "Ormond Quay" is the quay I've painted most of those in our capital city. Like all of my paintings of the quays it came out of a lifetime of walks along both sides of the Liffey, combined with a love of squares and rectangles. One of my happiest places. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
