On this day in 1847, artist Norman Garstin was born in Ireland. After careers in engineering, architecture and diamond prospecting, he settled in Penzance in 1889. He taught Harold Harvey and his daughter Alethea. His famous The Rain it Raineth Every Day captures the Penzance promenade.

Work of the Week! ⁠ Newlyn Slip by William Edward Croxford (1852-1926) Newlyn slip with figures on the slip and a boat coming ashore. ⁠ Croxford travelled extensively and lived in Hastings and later in Cornwall at Newlyn and St. Ives. He died in 1926.

Stanhope Forbes’s The Seine Boat (1904) is currently on display in Gallery 5. On long-term loan, the ‘seine’ net shown in the boat was used to catch pilchards, while the ‘tuck’ net, used alongside it, can be seen in the boat behind.

Work of the Week! Coombe Valley Factory, Newlyn by Adrian Ryan Once home to a stamping mill, Sanatogen and Cornish Food Products, the factory produced fish-based fertiliser—much to the dismay of locals who complained about the smell! The chimneys came down in the 1960s.
