Two things can be true: It’s a Wonderful Life is a great movie that will still make me cry no matter how many times I see it, and Mary’s terrible alternate reality fate being that she works in a library and wears glasses is unintentionally hilarious.

How I find this film speaking to me is in what it says about how you can’t ever be sure, in the moment, of what the story of your life actually is If it seems like you’re a failure, if all the information you have seems to be screaming that at you—you still can’t be certain that’s true
Months later, with the cameras rolling in the scene at Martini’s, praying for help, Stewart broke down and started crying for real. “As I said those words,” he wrote years later, “I felt the loneliness, the hopelessness of people who had nowhere to turn, and my eyes filled with tears. I broke down sobbing.”

And a little while later, in the house that drove him mad, in the town he’d been running from all his life, he would be drinking champagne, he would be singing, and everyone he knew would be there.

How many people are sick this holiday season? Either with an acute infection or with debilitating chronic illness that followed their Covid infection? Why can’t we access tests, free respirators & accurate data about cases & hospitalizations/deaths? Why don’t we have clean air in public spaces? /3

The early days of Covid showed us that if the government wanted - they could take care of everyone. They could provide a universal basic income, accommodate the needs of disabled people who had been pleading for remote healthcare & other services for years. They could keep us fed, safe and housed 🧵

Have you ordered your Christmas eels yet? Have you?? Medieval kings often served eels at their Xmas feasts. In 1213, King John had 10,000 eels at his holiday party. His son, Henry, once ordered up 40,000! So get on it! You don't want your party to be the First Nö-eel, do you? 🗃️🧪
Meme. Painting of the wise men coming to see the baby Jesus. Mary, in a blue cloak, is holding the baby while Joseph stands behind her in brown clothes. Mary looks adoring, and Joe looks old. His hair is gray, and he's balding, & he looks like a man who'd need to worry about his young wife stepping out. There are a couple of women in the background who look like they're gossiping.

The cow is looking on in the background, peering out of a cave and lowering over an empty manger with the sense of an animal that would like it's trough back, please.

The whole right side of the scene is take up by the wise men and their massive entourage. One of the magi is bending to receive Jesus' infant blessing (which may smell like spit up). The others await their turn They're all super-wealthy; even their horse is gold-bedecked. But are they going to set the Holy Family up for life? Nope. They're gonna leave some party favors and jet. Kings, man.

Meme text reads:
"Anguilles we have heard on high!"

Infectious diseases killed Victorian children at alarming rates — their novels highlight the fragility of public health today
Between 40% and 50% of children didn’t live past 5 in the US during the 19th century. Popular authors like Charles Dickens documented the common but no less gutting grief of losing a child.

The penicillin strain for mass production was found on a moldy cantaloupe in a Peoria, Illinois grocery store. During WWII, we produced billions of doses using corn byproduct fermentation. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penicil...
Wikipedia excerpt: Mass production
As the medical application was established, the Oxford team found that it was impossible to produce usable amounts in their laboratory.[89] Failing to persuade the British government, Florey and Heatley travelled to the US in June 1941 with their mould samples in order to interest the US government for large-scale production.[95][96] They approached the USDA Northern Regional Research Laboratory (NRRL, now the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research) at Peoria, Illinois, where facilities for large-scale fermentations were established.[97][96] Mass culture of the mould and search for better moulds immediately followed.[95]Wikipedia excerpt: After a worldwide search in 1943, a mouldy cantaloupe in a Peoria, Illinois market was found to contain the best strain of mould for production using the corn steep liquor process.[102] Six times as much penicillin could be produced compared to using Fleming's mold.[96] Pfizer scientist Jasper H. Kane suggested using a deep-tank fermentation method for producing large quantities of pharmaceutical-grade penicillin.[103][26]: 109  Large-scale production resulted from the development of a deep-tank fermentation plant by chemical engineer Margaret Hutchinson Rousseau.[104] As a direct result of the war and the War Production Board, by June 1945, over 646 billion units per year were being produced.[101]

The Yule Lads are the sons of Grýla and Leppalúði. They are a group of 13 mischievous pranksters who steal from or harass the population, and all have descriptive names that convey their favorite way of harassing.[1] They come to town one by one during the last 13 nights before Yule. They leave small gifts in shoes that children have placed on window sills, but if the child has been disobedient, they instead leave a rotten potato in the shoe.
