This week at The Sick Times, Lisa Kava shares a few things that she learned about advocacy during the #LongCOVID Moonshot. bit.ly/4nyX1Ok
A collage of press clippings and images related to the Long Covid Moonshot bill and advocacy around it, including including images of Bernie Sanders, Ziyad Al-Aly, and advocates in blue “Moonshot” shirts and masks after a senate hearing. The text reads, “The Sick Times. A toolkit for new advocates: What I learned from the Long COVID Moonshot campaign. By Lisa Kava.” If you’re thinking about getting involved in advocacy yourself, know that you don’t have to do it perfectly, and you don’t have to carry it forever. 💊 The antiviral ensitrelvir was found to prevent COVID-19 in people exposed to COVID-positive individuals 💷 The U.K. government announced £4.75 million in funding for ME study 👂 A new phase 2 trial is studying a compound for Long COVID related tinnitus Research updates: bit.ly/42PMTY7
A graphic shows a blister pack of ensitrelvir pills in a "blister" pack. The packing marks the round, blue pills as 125 mg each. The text reads, “The Sick Times. Long COVID research updates. The antiviral ensitrelvir was found to prevent COVID-19 in people exposed to COVID-positive individuals. The U.K. government recently announced £4.75 million in funding for a genomics study of ME. A new phase 2 trial studying a compound for Long COVID related tinnitus was recently announced.” The antiviral ensitrelvir was found to prevent COVID-19 in people exposed to COVID-positive individuals. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and included over 2,000 participants who took the treatment pill or a placebo. Researchers found that the drug cut the risk of COVID-19 by two-thirds for household members when taken 72 hours after an infected person in the household developed symptoms. In a news release, a representative of the drugmaker Shiniogi said the antiviral could cut the risk of not just COVID-19, but also acquiring new diseases triggered by COVID-19, including Long COVID. The drug is approved in Japan for post-exposure prophylaxis use, or “PEP”, and is currently being considered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The U.K. government recently announced £4.75 million ($6.4 million USD) in funding for a genomics study of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). The research project, Sequence ME, builds upon findings of the Decode ME study that found key genetic differences in people with ME. The new funding will allow researchers to sequence the genomes of 6,000 people with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) to generate a “high-resolution genetic map of the illness.” The second phase of funding adds to an initial investment announced earlier this year. “This project will allow us to pinpoint individual genes disrupted in [ME], moving beyond broader chromosomal signals identified to date,” said researcher Chris Ponting.
A new phase 2 trial studying a compound for Long COVID related tinnitus was recently announced. The pilot study will enroll 20 participants with Long COVID or COVID-19 related vaccine injury in Ithaca, New York, who have not responded to standard tinnitus treatment. Participants will test compounded dimethyl sulfoxide-based ear drops and cream for 30 days. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an experimental solvent that was studied in 1975 for tinnitus in a very small study. This study, which does not have a placebo and will test the safety of the drug, is enrolling by invitation by the telehealth clinic, Leading Edge Clinic.

I’m sure it eases the conscience to say “no one anticipated this!” but it’s an absolute lie. The second long covid started happening, disability activists were extremely clear what the consequences could be.
Screenshot of text from Jerome Adams: Reminder: Long COVID's disability & suffering will be the pandemic's most devastating long-term global legacy. Neither GBD supporters nor critics anticipated its scale or included it in their policy calculus -and
"let er rip" strategies prioritizing widespread exposure clearly worsen the toll. Millions affected, with real costs in lives and productivity (on top of 20 million direct deaths globally, which we should never forget or minimize).

I think this is especially harmful at a time when people are seeing the Trump administration destroy government and are feeling the effects of it. Now, more than ever, is the time for Democrats to make the case for all the ways government can improve lives, and how we must all pitch in to do that.

This is why the Democrats' current obsession with tax cuts is so dangerous. They're paving the way for more extreme proposals like ending progressive taxation altogether. Again, we don't need "Republican lite." We need a party that affirms that paying for the things government does is good.

A tangent here, but I'm not a huge fan of the growing anti-tax sentiment from Democrats at a time when municipal budgets around the country (including here in Massachusetts) are getting absolutely crushed by the one-two punch of falling federal/state aid and rising healthcare and retirement costs.

This enrages me. We have a novel virus with completely unknown long-term effects and very dangerous short and medium term effects, and an antiviral that can reduce some of these risks, and people cannot even figure out how to test for it anymore.
Screenshot from Reddit: Im 25. l assume i got covid last month. I dont even know how i would know i have covid. Covid tests are only available for old people at the pharmacy for some odd reason. They used to be free back when covid was popular. Anyways, ive been dealing with energy depletion. Remember that earlier Bonnie Henry said the 4 Canadians had no known direct contact with the people who fell ill on the ship, and they were considered "lower risk because of the location of their cabins on the ship and the activities they were engaged in."
British Columbia’s provincial health officer says one of the four Canadians isolating in the province who had been on board a cruise ship where there was a hantavirus outbreak has received a “presumptive positive” test.

Dr. Bonnie Henry says the person, who is from the Yukon, developed “mild symptoms” on Thursday including a fever and a headache and that samples have been sent to a national microbiology lab in Winnipeg for the tests to be confirmed.

Henry says protocols were followed and that three of the four people who were isolating in B.C. have been brought to hospitals in Victoria and the fourth person remains isolating at home.

Hey everyone! The minimizer who overconfidently "blew it" with SARS (to quote her colleagues) and overconfidently dismissed airborne transmission of COVID as a "tempest in a teapot" (which the UK COVID Inquiry found was a "widespread failure") is "confident there's no additional risk". Feel safe?
"We've had infection control precautions in place from the moment these people arrived in British Columbia, and I'm confident there's no additional risk to anybody else outside of the people who have been caring for these individuals," Henry said, referring to the health-care workers who need to follow PPE protocols.Everybody wanted it to be over, and Carolyn Abramson in the Globe said that once they … things changed once they lifted the travel advisory, the travel

It is just amazing everybody blew it.1.52	The clinical community’s reliance on these assumptions and the associated emphasis on cut-off points was flawed.89 The Inquiry acknowledges that this was a widespread failure and that there was a general belief within clinical spheres at the outset of the pandemic that droplets were the most likely source of Covid-19 transmission. However, it was a clear failure by the public health bodies of the four nations and the UK IPC Cell not to account for the fact that the assumptions made may have been wrong.

Mick Foley was the 1st wrestler I was really a fan of/had a crush on (partially because of a gorgeous article he wrote about Tori Amos.) He's an incredibly talented teddy bear with a heart of gold (see also: why I adore Hangman Adam Page). So, I'm not surprised he took a stand, but I'm happy he did.
A Facebook post by former wrestler Mick Foley:

PARTING WAYS WITH WWE
While I have been concerned about WWE‘s close relationship with Donald Trump for several months — especially in light of his administration’s ongoing cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants (and pretty much anyone who “looks like an immigrant”) — reading the President’s incredibly cruel comments in the wake of Rob Reiner’s death is the final straw for me.
I no longer wish to represent a company that coddles a man so seemingly void of compassion as he marches our country towards autocracy. Last night, I informed @WWE talent relations that I would not be making any appearances for the company as long as this man remains in office. Additionally, I will not be signing a new Legends deal when my current one expires in June. I love WWE, will always treasure my time with them, and I am deeply appreciative for all the opportunities they afforded me. But, in the words of Popeye the sailor, “I stands all I can stands, and I can’t stands no more.”

I *desperately* need help buying a bag of rice, dried beans, lentils, and canned tomatoes. And if possible, a large green cabbage. I've been surviving on instant noodles. If anyone can help me buy groceries I would greatly appreciate it ❤️

THEY'VE PUT ME ON THE POCKETSTATION COOP. I'M BEING RENDERED IN A 32 BY 32 GRID OF MONOCHROME PIXELS. THE BOYS BACK AT QUANTICO SAID THEY'RE GOING TO RELOCATE ME TO A "DOKO DEMO ISSYO" UNTIL THEY CAN GET THIS STRAIGHTENED OUT.

When you actually measure if a well-fitted respirator blocks viruses, the answer is unequivocally yes. But when it doesn’t seal, orwhen you take it off to eat or scratch your nose, guess what, it doesn’t matter if the mask protected you ten minutes ago if you inhale virus unmasked now.

Ok this is important. A big myths out there is that studies show masks don’t work. When you look at what the studies measured, what they actually show is masks don’t work *if you don’t wear them.* They didn’t measure the tool, they measured the wearers behavior. www.independent.co.uk/news/health/...
