🏛️ Do party youth wings get a real say? @sofiamarini.bsky.social and @henrikseeberg.bsky.social hand-code 57 youth wing statutes from 11 countries. Most of them have high levels of internal democracy and autonomy from the senior party but low access to the senior party. 🔗 doi.org/10.1080/0140...
Description of the article "How political parties' youth wings are organised: comparative evidence from 57 statutes in 11 countries" by Sofia Marini and Henrik Bech Seeberg, published online first in West European Politics.
Scatter plot of internal democracy in the parent party (x-axis) against internal democracy in its youth wing (y-axis), one marker per pair, with several cases labelled (SF, Forza Italia, Parti Socialiste, Høyre). The fitted line is almost flat and the association is not statistically significant, so knowing how internally democratic a senior party is tells you little about its youth wing.
Small-multiple plot showing the distribution of internal democracy, autonomy and access for the youth wings of each of the 11 countries, with medians marked. Youth wings look more alike within a country than across countries: autonomy is uniformly high in Denmark, Norway and Sweden but low and dispersed in Italy, France and Portugal, and access sits near zero almost everywhere except a few Finnish and Italian cases. Country differences account for much of the variation in internal democracy and autonomy, while party family accounts for essentially none.

I've spent sometime over the last few months working on a way to generate quizzes for my students based on their own papers. I might write up a blog about my experiment later, but for now here is the code if anyone is interested in trying. github.com/reuning/quiz...
Quiz Generator

A local LLM-powered quiz generation tool that creates multiple-choice quizzes from student assignments and documents. There are examples if you are interested in what the results looks like.

Currently it uses a local LLM through Ollama. There are validation checks to make sure it produces the right number of questions, and options. I also have set it up to use randomization via python on the answers (when I initially ran it without that almost every anser was B). I personally had good luck with Qwen 3.5.
Why?

There are two related purposes to this idea:

A student who has spent time working and writing a paper ought to be able to easily answer questions about that paper. Yes, this was partially created out of a concern over AI use.

I am a firm believer that the purpose of writing is to learn, I hope that this quiz demonstrates to students what they learned through their own research.

I genuinely think the president and many of his advisers, scammers, hustlers, and keyboard gangsters, don’t understand this concept at all and you can see it in the pattern of their mistakes from Minneapolis to Tehran www.nytimes.com/2026/03/29/o...
Yet never has so much been seen, so precisely, by so many people who understand so little of what they are seeing. A system can tell you where a man is. It cannot tell you what his death will mean for a nation. Such systems are trained on behavior, not on meaning — they can track what an adversary does but not what he fears, honors, remembers or would die for.

Absolutely incredible sequence from CNN. "Maduro was a paranoid lunatic always lying about the CIA trying to overthrow him. Anyways, now that the CIA has overthrown him..."
It remains to be seen how the Venezuelan people will respond to a more overt CIA presence in the country post-Maduro. For years, Maduro cast the CIA as a convenient boogey man, repeatedly accusing the agency – without evidence – of attempting to topple his regime as he clung to power despite US opposition.

Now, the CIA has helped supplant Maduro and is poised to help actively manage the Trump administration’s dealings with Venezuela’s new leadership.

Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti. "Please get the truth out about our son."
Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti
Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti

“We are heartbroken but also very angry.

Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact.

I do not throw around the ‘hero’ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed.

Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.

A million Muslims live in New York City. We belong here, as does every other New Yorker. This is vile Islamophobia from the Councilwoman and it has no place in our city.
A Quote Tweet from NYC Councilmember Vickie Paladino @VickieForNYC stating:

“We’re in the midst of a global jihad the likes of which the world has never seen, and we cannot ignore it.

“We need to take every seriously the need to begin the expulsion of Muslims from western nations, or at the very least the severe sanction of them within western borders.

“The administration needs to begin developing a formal legal framework for the denaturalization process and get it over with before we end up with another 9/11 or worse. Enough is enough.”

The quoted tweet from @DrewPavlu stating:

“TERROR ATTACK SYDNEY AT LEAST 10 DEAD

Lower-income people are less likely to vote than higher-income people, across racial groups - and that gap has been growing. That’s a real problem for the future of US democracy. It’s not apathy or ignorance - for many, it’s a sense that politics is not for or about them. In a report out in Jan +
Chart with Turnout on the Y axis & election year (2016, 2020, and 2024) on the X axis. 6 lines, 3 for White, Black, and Hispanic in households making over $100k/year, 3 for the same groups in households making under $30k/year.

Overall you can see turnout increasing among higher-income people in all three racial groups, and declining (White and Black) or staying flat (Hispanic) among low-income people; the turnout gap by income is much larger in 2024 than in 2020 or 2016.

from 2016 -> 2024:
- White $100k turnout goes from 65% to 78% while white under $30k turnout goes from 55% to 49%
- Black over $100k turnout goes from 51% to 64% while Black under $30k turnout goes from 48% to 33%
- Hispanic over $100k turnout goes from 52% to 67% while Hispanic under $30k turnout stays flat at about 36% (higher in 2020 at 42%).
