These seven young men are so brave and this institution that is supposed to serve them but doesn’t is so deeply deranged and corrupted. We should commend them for their bravery while also condemning the conditions that necessitate it.

If higher ed focuses solely on ROI to rebuild trust, same thing will happen
Screenshot of newsletter which reads: Weiss walked into CBS News repeatedly declaring that Americans do not trust the press. She vowed to restore trust in the institution she now leads. But so far, the cold hard ratings data suggests it’s her decisions that viewers do not trust.

Social sciences colleagues working on more critical topics (e.g., inequality, racism, collective action), how are we thinking about advising our PhD students around the NSF GRFP this cycle? Is it work the effort, any sense whether they will receive fair consideration? A lost cause at the moment?

The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. A letter from the mother of Alex Pretti, six months after he was murdered by ICE.
suzpretti

Today marks the six-month anniversary of Alex's murder. No one has been held accountable, no apologies, not a single phone call from any governmental official, hospital personnel, or the mpls police dept. Six-months of pain, a roller-coaster of trauma over and over. Every time another a death, another mention, a picture, a tribute, a sorrow so deep. I wonder how to move forward. Will I ever get over this loss and this pain?
Will I ever be able to enjoy life again? How does one live knowing that I have no power to change what has happened?

And yet the outreach not only from Minnesota, but from around the world has been nothing less than spectacular. Every card, every gift, every heartfelt letter has been read, touched, held, and cherished by us all. The kindness you've all shown us is beyond words. Please never forget Alex and what he believed in ~ equality and peace for all. I will remember the things that made you, you. It will never take your memory. As long as I'm here, you will never be forgotten.

For all you asking what you can do. Continue this fight. Never give up your right to speak out, protect your neighbor, your community and don't forget to spend time with those you love...

INBOX: the last dedicated science reporter at The Wall Street Journal, @aylinwoodward.bsky.social, has left the newsroom. This came after the Murdoch-owned newspaper dissolved its Health and Science Bureau last October. NPR, CBS, and WaPo also gutted their climate desks in the last eight months.
After nearly five incredible years, The Journal's last remaining dedicated science reporter (that's me!) has left WSJ. Following the dissolution of the miraculous Health & Science Bureau last October, myself and a small numbers of others worked hard to continue our former team's legacy, but the time has finally come for me to move on.

I am deeply grateful for all of the opportunities this publication -- and the journalist community I met there -- has given me. From stories about T. rex lips to primate booze problems to shrinking brains, to Nobel Prize and NASA mission coverage, Jane Goodall's obituary, winter storm, volcano and wildfire smoke stories, I left no scientific stone unturned, working constantly to inspire curiosity and wonder in Journal readers during times of increasing turmoil and challenge. I met some of my closest friends, wrote for two of the most phenomenal editors I'll ever have the privilege of working with, saw Evan come home, and learned (in retrospect, naturally) the gift it is to be on a team of professional nerds who drive the cutting edge of health and science journalism in America while uplifting each other and their craft.

Well, this is your counterprogramming kid signing off. Not sure where I'll end up next, but don't be strangers y'all. In the meantime, I'll be coaching roller derby across the U.S., South America and Europe!
